Update. The tweet above about players not being able to transfer must be incorrect. Clemson’s former player RJ Godfrey transferred to Arizona yesterday.
Players from the 2022 recruiting class who qualify have been granted an extra season of eligibility by court order.
That ruling did NOT eliminate NCAA transfer rules. The judge later clarified that athletes still have to follow the existing transfer regulations.
Who CAN transfer?
Players who were already eligible to enter the transfer portal under NCAA rules, including those who use the NCAA’s special Aug. 3–10 portal window created in response to the ruling.
Who CAN’T transfer?
Players who missed the applicable transfer window or otherwise don’t qualify under NCAA transfer rules. The extra year of eligibility does not automatically give every player the right to change schools. The court specifically said it only granted the extra year—not a waiver of transfer, roster, or other NCAA rules.
Bottom line: The ruling gives eligible 2022 athletes another year to play, not unlimited freedom to transfer. Eligibility and transfer rules are two separate issues. Given that House previously entered the transfer portal, he could technically transfer elsewhere. I'm not aware of whether Johnston entered the portal or will use the NCAA’s special Aug. 3–10 portal window created in response to the ruling.
