Expecting big things from Shifflit this season. He has been underwhelming in the past due to injury and playing time.

Honestly, I think that probably takes a little too critical of a view.

Furman's run game is excellent and Shiflett's ability to block downfield is one of the valuable components to our offense.

(scanning through some video to support my argument, I found this one from last season. I've always mostly focused on the action leading to Harris' long run, but watch Shiflett annihilate the defender on the near side.)

So, no. He hasn't lit up the stat chart yet, but he contributes a ton to the offense.

When I go back and watch clips from those games from the last half of the year, I am struck at just how physical Furman plays on both sides of the ball.

I don’t know which two receivers he was referring to when Coach Dudzik said that, but the fact that he feels this way implies a lot of excitement about the talent in the WR room. Also, Mason Pline at 6-7 and 260 lbs and CCH’s observations that “ he is very athletic” means we should be in good shape with our passing game if we stay healthy. Just watch Pline’s high school basketball highlights. Then you have to deal with all our RBs and we present some real challenges to a defensive coordinator.

I think we're going to throw a lot at a defense schematically.

We're going to have a thumping run game behind a good offensive line. That alone is a problem for a defense.

With in-line TEs, Furman is going to force teams to declare the strength of their defensive formation before the snap.

With Huff's acumen and running ability, teams are going to struggle to outnumber Furman at the point of attack in the run game. Huff can hold backside defenders with his reads, giving Furman a numbers advantage.

The RPO game is going to punish teams that try too aggressively to come up against the run. Furman has demonstrated the ability to punish a team for moving safeties and linebackers up against the run game and throwing in behind them.

There's also enough deep ball threats to keep the defense honest.

Also, after watching how often Ryan Miller was left open in the end zone inside the 10, I'm inclined to think a 6'7 basketball player is going to be a tough assignment deep in the red zone.

The funny thing is the FU offense will have the defense’s heads spinning and the 6’7 TE will be uncovered.

The play design deep in the red zone was where it really seemed like Roper was playing chess against the opponent's attempts to play checkers.

It shocked me how often Ryan Miller was left open in the end zone. He's the one receiver on Furman's roster you should be covering, and he was often the beneficiary of backfield confusion and miscommunication. Roper did an excellent job with the scheme and giving defenses different looks. Miller was frequently just left uncovered.

I haven't the slightest idea about NFL aspirations, but Harris and Dean should be arguably the best 1-2 punch at WR in the SoCon.

Harris, in particular, somewhat quietly put up an outstanding season as the #2 option behind Ryan Miller. His 48 catches and 667 yards would rival some of the best seasons from a Furman WR the last 20 years.

I think most encouraging for Furman fans is how much better Harris got over the course of the season. He was outstanding the last 6 games and had a 40+ yard reception in 4 of the last 5 contests, really solidifying himself as a deep threat in this offense.
As much as I don't want to take what I assume will be FUbear's side, I think in regards to the best 1-2 punch at WR in the SoCon, the conversation has to at least start with Harper and James. Dean has potential to be pretty good, but not sure he did enough last year to vault them ahead of Mercer's duo.

I do believe we are just starting to see what Harris is capable of going forward. Like Jackal said, I felt like you could see him growing as the season unfolded. Dean and Anderson are certainly capable and should see more production this year without Ryan Miller.
LOL - No need to take a "side" in this conversation.

FUBeAR just checked everyone's 2023 Season Stats and every Player in the country, at any position, all have a bunch of aughts by their names right now. What will happen this season remains to be seen and there is tremendous potential everywhere FUBeAR looks.

But...if we want to look 'behind the boat’ back to 2022, for whatever reason anyone would want to do that, then the 'wakes' for the Players / "1-2 Punches" named previously in this thread (plus adding back Miller, just for fun) looked like this...

Team | Player | Receptions | Yards | TD's | KR's | Yds | TD's | PR's | Yds | TD's | Carries | Yds | TD's | 'Touches' | Yds | TD's

Evaluate and 'argue' the data above as you would like...

Also, FWIW, Sam Herder at Hero Sports ranked James as the #2 and Harper as the #5 best returning WR's in FCS for 2023. https://herosports.com/fcs-football-top ... vers-bzbz/ As previously stated here on more than a few occasions, FUBeAR is not always a fan of Mr. Herder's opinions, but it is hard to deny, those 2 Bears are pretty darn good Players...as, certainly, are Harris and Dean.

FUBeAR expects (and hopes) to see a lot of amazing play out of all 4 of them in 2023!
FUBeAR (best name on the board)... -- Good data here. somewhat different schemes at each school but clearly Mercer gets more out of their top two recvrs than we do. Again, different schemes. I would assume that Miller was the best TE in the league last year as he is getting his shot in the NFL. However, he is no longer at Furman - unfortunately ... Mercer always has some nasty skill guys. I am just glad we don't have to deal with that man-child bowling ball of a RB they had a few years back... anyone recall his name? I hope all 4 do great things except that them mercer dudes have a real off day when they play Furman :P

Tyray Devezin - for whatever reason, departed Mercer after playing in the 3 Fall games of 2020 under the new Coaching Staff. Transferred to D2 West Georgia https://uwgathletics.com/sports/footba ... vezin/8594, where his younger brother was on the Team as a DLman, for his final season (2021). Had a solid season at UWG where they seemed to have a ‘committee’ of 4 RB’s sharing the load fairly equally.

Tyray then landed the gig as the RB Coach at D2, Shorter University in Rome, GA since this Spring,
