Maybe it's hard to tell the difference between a bunch of dudes randomly running around kicking a ball back and forth for no reason.

Exactly. I actually tried my best to watch one of the games on espn the other day. Watched for 15 minutes and nothing happened except about 5 fall downs/fake injuries which were quite comical. After 15 minutes of not even an attempt at a goal I gave up. Most borng sport ever and you have to feel sorry for the rest of the world because this is basically all they have.

I didn't play much soccer as a kid but I did play some intramural soccer at Furman. I found that the game is often more intense and interesting to play than it is to watch. You constantly have to be alert and active as a player because a game can be won or lost at any time. Soccer favors mistake-free play more than bold, risky play. As the common refrain goes - "safety first."
