The world was changed in this time period. All sports fans were hard hit but Furman was harder hit than most.
March 2020- After a very successful regular season expectations were high heading into the SoCon tourney. Game 1 against the #7 seed ended the season all too early.
March 2020- With an NIT bid expected, the NIT is cancelled.
March 2020- Baseball is suspended and then cancelled.
May 2020- Barely 2 months into the pandemic the most devastating blow was self inflicted by ED when in a knee jerk, over-reaction she decided to end the historic 108 year old Furman baseball program. When a grass roots effort was started to keep baseball she quickly squashed those efforts telling those involved the decision was final.
August 2020- Preseason football practice begins with hopes of a season.
August 2020- ACC and SEC vow to play but the SEC says no ooc games thus we lose the much anticipated Tennessee game.
August 2020- Barely 2 weeks before the opener the SoCon shuts down and vows to play spring football.
October 2020- NCAA says basketball season will be played but a delayed start.
November 2020- Basketball start 2 weeks late and we lose the Louisville game but we are playing.
December 2020- Expectations are still high after a disappointing loss to a very mediocre Cincy team. The Paladins head to Alabama and for the first 32 minutes look like one of the best teams in the country. With a little help from the refs we lose the game in the last couple of minutes after leading the whole game. Opportunity lost and the ‘dins never recovered.
Jan-Feb 2021- We struggle through the SoCon season but still have a chance to win the regular season at the end only to lose to WC again by one point. That loss eventually cost us an NIT bid, more than likely.
Jan 2021- Darren Grainger transfers. We were told that HS had won the starting job so all is good. This turned out to be much bigger deal than first thought.
Feb 2021- Football starts with a blowout win and all looks good only to come crashing down the following week when we lose to VMI for only the second time in 40 years. Questions suddenly arrive,
March 2021- Even though we finish third the draw looks very favorable. In the first game we pkay well for 32 minutes and then things start to go south. 15 point lead dwindles away in the last 8 minutes. A 10 point lead vanishes in the last 3 minutes. We lose a game that was near impossible to lose but we manage to do it.
March 2021 - The NIT cuts its field in half and we lose another NIT bid.
March 2021- With basketball done we still have football. Football wins the next 2 but things just don’t look good.
Next comes a home loss to UTC, a team admittedly doesn’t even want to be playing.
March 2021- With foitball surprisingly over much earler than we thought, Noah Gurley gives us a gut punch by announcing he is transferring. This is followed by another fb loss to a very young Mercer team and the offense is in the worst shape we have seen in many years and looks it has no idea whatbits doing.
This week- high expectatiins for football are long gone and instead have turned into disappointment and heartache. A win against Citadel this week would help some. A loss will just add on to the disappointment we all feel about the fb team. Regardless of the outcome Saturday expectaions going into the fall will be extremely low.
Yes this has been a rough year for eveyone but it seens Furman has endured more disappointment than most. Here is hoping the coming year will be much better. Football outlook looks bleak but theres always hope and maybe basketball can come through. I miss baseball.

Being a health care provider and small business owner my 3/20-3/21 list makes the above look a tad minuscule. Way down the totem pole for me. My list doesn't even compare to those that have lost loved ones.

yeah 2020 and early 2021 sucked

what a shocker.

Of course yes, we've had more than our share of disappointments but obsessing over them isn't going to make it any better. Gotta move forward and spend more time looking in the windshield than the rear view mirror.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage

GoPaladins.com is not affiliated with Furman University or its athletics programs.
