Timmons Arena construction cost was 10.9 million in 1997. In 2017 dollars that's about 16.6 million. Using figures from an earlier post in this thread , Wofford's basketball arena was built in 2017 at 35 million. Elon's basketball arena was built in 2018 for 40-45 million. So, Furman's basketball arena cost is 16.6 million in today's dollars, Elon's basketball arena cost is 40-45 million in today's dollars, and Wofford's basketball arena cost is 35 million in today's dollars. Something is horribly wrong with Furman's funding of basketball arena facilities.

Interesting.
We need our benefactors to step forward.
In addition to Elon's new arena (which information that I saw said cost $20 million instead of the $40-45 million figure) and in addition to Wofford's new arena ($35 million),
… here are some very interesting other relatively new or brand new arenas at some "smaller" D-I schools:
----California Baptist, 2017, $73 million
----UMBC, 2018, $85 million
----New Jersey Institute of Technology, 2017, $102 million
----Colgate, 2014, $38 million ("Class of 1965 Arena" [ "...built partly with the aid of 559 donors, a significant number of whom represented the Colgate Class of 1965."]).
----Grand Canyon University, 2011, $40 million; expansion in 2014

How many games did we sell out this year? 5, 10, ? Many of the games we did sell out, I heard on this board, many ticket holders did not come to the games. If we win 15 games next year, will we really need more seats. Make Furman basketball the hottest ticket in SC. Make Timmons the place people want to come to and been seen. We are not there yet. After 2 years of selling out 90% of our home games, then consider more seats.
My $.02
Add steep stands behind the baskets and move the student section to these seats. This will open up the prime former student section seats to the public and create a better home court advantage by putting our students right behind the basket (like most schools). This is a relatively inexpensive upgrade and wouldn't cause problems with he traffic flow to the handicap seats and the concession stand/bathrooms on the lower level.
Exactly. Add and move students. Also fixes the security staff obsession to keep the students off the floor

So with more people interested in FU basketball, would it be easier to schedule home games with good mid-majors and power conferences by utilizing the basketball arena downtown? It seems like you could get more fans to the game that way and opposing teams may see it as less of a home court advantage. I'm not talking a lot of games, but maybe 2 or 3 homes games per year.

I like the idea. Always been in favor of bringing a name team to the well. This would be a great time to play an old North-South type event with Furman and Wofford playing Clempson and SC on Friday and Saturday nights. Of course CU and SC would never go for that with both of them being down and FU and WC on the rise. I think it could still work with 2 other teams.

We can play with numbers.
… If 1 basketball player on a full-scholarship costs approximately $66,000 per year and $264,000 for 4 years, then what if every scholarship basketball player still living would give back 10% of the cost (in its 2019 iteration) of their Furman education.
… Suppose there are 100 of those still living.
… This could produce (100 x 0.10 x $264,000 = ) $2,640,000.00.
… $2,640,000 could be good seed money to get a very good basketball facilities improvement campaign started and very good incentive to get other benefactors involved at all levels.
We need approximately $50,000,000.
(*And let's not forget about the women's basketball scholarship players. Suppose there are 25 of those still living.
Add $660,000 from them [10% of the cost (in its 2019 iteration) of their Furman education] to the above $2,640,000.00, and the seed money becomes $3,300,000.)

Of course but it doesn't cost $60,000+ a year to go to Furman. That number is the most it can cost. I doubt that more than 10% pay that much. Hard to measure what it really costs per scholarship basketball player. The $60+ is only a price tag. How many students would chose to go to Furman if there were no athletic programs. How many would attend if their was no financial aid.? Furman could not support the cost of their faculty, staff or manage their facilities if scholarships were not available. You must look at value to determine the real costs. It's both cost and value.

I get that very few people pay that quoted cost (though a whole lot of prospective applicants ARE scared away by the quoted cost). (Also, if 10% actually do pay full cost, that is still 280 or so students/families.). However, that $66,000 figure is a way to quantify a nominal value of an athlete getting a full scholarship. SOMEBODY or some source IS paying that for that cost, either the student (family, loans), or the university via the scholarship, discounts, etc. If that cost means nothing, then it should cease to be quoted.

What about the Wrestling Alumni? They should contribute also! I’m sure Furman’s Wrestling Team would hold their matches in the new arena.....oh, wait.
