ETSU could be a darkhorse. New Coach brought half his former team with him plus add in transfers etc.

Don’t disagree entirely, but let’s be objective about that “half his former team”…

GARDNER-WEBB -VS- MERCER (‘23)
Team 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total

Gardner-Webb 0 7 0 0 7
Mercer 0 14 0 3 17

MERCER -VS- GARDNER-WEBB (‘22)
Team 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total

Mercer 21 7 7 10 45
Gardner-Webb 0 7 7 0 14

Good point but they did win 5 of their last 6 with Mercer being their only loss which knocked them out of any playoff consideration.

With transfer rules, it's hard to predict who is going to be what each season because coaches can essentially remake their roster every season.

Now, I think I've seen enough at the FCS level to come to the conclusion that Furman's method of recruit, develop, retain is more likely a successful approach than trying to renovate your roster each season with transfer players.

Samford Football 2024 will be a good test of this hypothesis.

They clearly made a program decision to pursue the opposite of FU’s approach and brought in about 40 transfers before ‘22 and they were a better Team.

They brought in another 40 or so before ‘23 and they went backward.

This year they have brought in a few fewer - about 30 or so (guesstimate only - haven’t done the ‘full compare’ analysis), but it will be interesting to see how this continued making over of 1/3 of your roster each year with transfers plays out.

The cumulative effect is less than we might assume as so many of the inbounds are 1-year ‘rentals’ - so they don’t have 110 transfers on their roster. Looks to be about 50 (counting JUCO’s). Furman has about 6 (not counting Prep Schools).

Hopefully, the righteous FU methodology, which we right-thinking people prefer for our College Football Teams, will prevail and we have the Ad Hoc Hired Homewood Hounds running back to B’Ham like scalded dogs when we tangle on 9/28 in the shadow of Paris Mountain.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
