NCAA.com headline on today's AP Poll:
College basketball rankings: Wisconsin rises, Furman ranked in new AP Top 25

This week's poll wasn't all about the high-major teams. Buffalo rose four more spots to No. 17 while Furman made an appearance in this week's top 25, rounding out the rankings.
...
Furman, meanwhile, is 8-0 with wins over two Final Four teams from last year (Villanova and Loyola Chicago). There's a good chance the Paladins could enter their Dec. 21 road game at LSU with a 12-0 record. Head coach Bob Richey has done a tremendous job in Greenville.

From the AP nationwide syndication (this specifically featured in the Fresno Bee ... with an action shot of the guys at top and a nice pic of Coach BR at bottom. I've pasted the link at the bottom of this post):

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: Furman plays for 1st time with ranking

RALEIGH, N.C.
Furman coach Bob Richey wants his players to savor the program's first appearance in the AP Top 25 poll, yet also remember how much work it took to get there.

He's hoping that approach will keep the 25th-ranked Paladins building toward something bigger, starting with Tuesday night's trip to Elon and a weekend visit to USC Upstate.

"The reality of it is this was not just something that was created by this team," Richey told The Associated Press. "There's a lot of people that are involved in this and have paved the way for this to happen."

The Paladins (8-0, 1-0 Southern Conference) had a marquee upset in November by beating reigning national champion Villanova in overtime on the road to grab some national attention. They also won at Loyola-Chicago , last year's surprise Final Four team.

And there was Jordan Lyons' 54-point showing , with 15 3-pointers to tie an NCAA record, against North Greenville on Nov. 15.

Then came Monday, when Furman grabbed the final spot in this week's poll and entered the week as one of 11 unbeaten teams left in Division I. Located in Greenville, South Carolina, Furman has tied a program record with 23 wins in each of the past two seasons and has won 15 of 16 dating to last season.

Richey, in his second season as head coach after six seasons on the Furman coaching staff, said the team addressed the ranking in a Monday meeting. That included first-year recruiting director Daniel Fowler, a four-year starter for the Paladins who recalled that his freshman team hoped just to reach 10 wins.

Now a team picked to finish fourth in the Southern Conference is chasing much more, such as its first Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth since 1980.

"The responsibility is we focus on the task at hand, we focus on improvement, we focus on getting better," Richey said. "We focus on being the best version of ourselves that we can. And we keep it about that.

"The second you get away from that and start falling in love with all the things that come with this exposure, then I think that's when you're going to quickly find yourself on your back."

Boom! First time ever in the AP Poll!

A pal of mine who knows our daughter graduated from Furman, pinged me out of the blue last night to ask if I'd seen the AP poll. He lives in New Mexico.

#24 Nebraska lost last night.

#23 Maryland is the underdog at Purdue tonight.

#20 Arizona St is playing #6 Nevada.

Some other potential good matchups for Furman's cause. If we take care of business on Saturday, we could potentially move up a spot or two.

*With an FU win Saturday
Indeed we should be able to move ahead of Nebraska with their loss to Minn., but they do still play Creighton Saturday so......
I think I would prefer Maryland to beat Purdue, as Purdue is only 1 vote behind us, if they win they will jump us and there is no guarantee that Maryland would drop below us.
#22 Miss St. plays Clemson Saturday
#18 Iowa lost to Mich. St. already this week and play Iowa St. tonight

The P&C is very rare, family owned daily newspaper, certainly more attuned to the community than that corporate behemoth Gannett.
More coverage in Greenville News on where Clemson's back-up QB is transferring than on Furman .

FYI- Purdue was one point behind us in this weeks poll so not sure who to root for in this one.

Probably Maryland to win... Voters moved them up a spot after losing to Virginia (which is understandable). It seems they view Maryland as a good team, so a Purdue win would most definitely push them ahead of us. A Purdue win could push Maryland out of the top 25, but I'd rather not take that chance... Regardless, the key is for us to keep winning. We need to do our part and keep winning basketball games. That's all we can control.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
