Looks like our opening night opponent has found themselves a trigger man…

All-Conference QB Nick Garcia Commits To Tennessee Tech
Former Glendale Community College quarterback Nick Garcia announced his commitment to Tennessee Tech. He will have two years of eligibility remaining for the Golden Eagles.

Garcia earned All-Conference honors in back-to-back seasons at Glendale. Over two seasons, Garcia totaled 4,524 passing yards and 54 passing touchdowns for the Vaqueros.

Garcia holds the school record for passing touchdowns, which he set against L.A. Southwest College with five passing touchdowns. He also ranks second in school history in career passing yards.

None of the 3 QB’s they had on the roster previously have ever recorded a college stat.

Not a fan of calling games "must wins," but Tennessee Tech and Kennesaw State are pretty much must wins for Furman.

I have not seen this reported, but with KSU transitioning to the FBS, I'd be interested to know whether they do what many other teams have done and just sort of redshirt everyone prior to moving classifications. They have only 9 games scheduled.

In order to have a realistic opportunity to meet expectations this season, all games except the one against the FBS P5 SEC Team, are “must wins.”

10-1, given a very good pre-season ranking, is likely to secure a Top 4 seed, which is (very nearly) required to advance to later playoff rounds.

9-2, even with a very good pre-season ranking, may not be enough to secure even a Top 8 seed, which is (very nearly) a ‘kiss of death’ with regard to advancing to later playoff rounds.

FUBeAR would think anything short of a quarterfinal playoff appearance this year would be below expectations…assuming we aren’t riddled with injuries and/or victims of 1 or more other ‘wild’ anomalies that recalibrates our trajectory. A semi-final appearance would well-meet expectations, and anything beyond that falls into the exceeded expectations category.

All that said, we should remember and acknowledge that, with very, very few exceptions, it’s really, really hard to win each and every college football game that a Team plays. REALLY HARD!! As fans, we should be extremely thankful and elated for our Team - for every Player & Coach & Staff Member, and for every one of their family members - for each and every game that they are able to overcome thousands of various adversities, and emerge as victors.

The one difference in that scenario now compared to when ASU and GSU moved up is the rule where guys can play 4 games and still redshirt. Maybe they play all their guys the first 4 games and punt on the rest of the year, maybe they stagger the 4 games, who knows. Definitely more of a wild card than the App and GSU transition years.

I have no idea how much better TTU will be, but I know they won't be the same team we shut out a few years ago. Thankfully, I think we're a better team as well. I would feel confident about the KSU game based on what I saw last year, but with the increase in scholarship players and the weirdness of a transition year, I'm not entirely sure what to expect.

As FUBear mentioned, a lot of things can happen during a game/season. The SoCon, I think, will also be better from top to bottom this year so every game will be a challenge I'm sure.

FUBeAR never ceases to be amazed at how the eggheads within academia and the out-of-touch NCAA can conspire to come up with a million and one ways to poop on kids.

Hope he finds a home...and hope some fly from TTU's Admissions Office and/or the NCAA’s home office is forced to take every snap against the Paladins' relentless pass rush!

Commentary on the NCAA aside, it's at least a little amusing to me that the success of Tennessee Tech's season might come down to whether an Oceanography credit from a junior college in central Arizona transfers to a college in central Tennessee.

According to Wikipedia, Oceanography is an Earth Science and therefore a Natural Science. So, someone is splitting some thin hairs in admissions.

Self-quoting update…

The Golden Eagles did add a couple of other QB’s to their roster…

Hayes Gibson - Originally, a PWO @ Iowa State, whose Dad was a Hall of Famer for the Cyclones and an NFL LB. But, looks like the young man never registered a stat in Ames and transferred to Blinn JC. Appears he was the backup QB @ Blinn or May have incurred an injury there last season and registered the following stats…

PASSING
NO. NAME YR GP COMP ATT PCT YDS Y/G Y/A TD INT LG EFFIC
14 Hayes Gibson So 5 22 43 51.2% 237 47.4 5.5 3 3 57 106.5

RUSHING
NO. NAME YR GP RUSH YDS Y/G AVG TD LG FUM LOST
14 Hayes Gibson So 5 13 45 9.0 3.5 1 58 - -

May have had an offer from South Dakota (not SDSU) out of HS, along with another PWO offer to Kansas State and was offered by Bryant before TTU offered / landed him.

Not a lot of college experience there…

They also had a Freshman QB enroll early - Jordyn Potts - TN State Championship winning QB and MVP of Championship Game. 3 Star with other offers from Murray State, Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky. Only 6-0 170, but unless they get someone else to don their purple and yella, FUBeAR would guess this True Freshman will be their starter in Game 1 on the road in Paladin Stadium. Coach Vaughn needs to give him a rude welcome to College Football, if so.
