In current (end of this season) rankings* of
all D-1 schools in basketball and in football:
-Furman is in the top 23% in basketball
and
-Furman is in the top 44% in football.
For a school of Furman’s size and resources, both of those are high rankings.
Be very thankful for where we are!
(*Sagarin)
* Top 8% in FCS Football in Sagarin
* Top 42% in D1 Football in Massey
* Top 6% in FCS Football in Massey
* Top 22% in D1 Hoops in Massey
* Top 25% in D1 Hoops in Massey Composite

ALL GOOD
Go Furman!

This is hardly a crucial measure of success -- and I'm painfully aware that few on this board read FurmanATT.com -- but I know the analytics and football season does better than basketball on my site. What slows the site to a crawl from now to football is the absence of baseball.
LaurensCountySports.com is about three times as big in terms of clicks and visits than FurmanATT. I didn't expect that to be the case. But I'm thankful for the support and both sites are growing. -- MD

Agree MD, the absence of baseball is still painful. Hate this time of year with no major Furman sports and the long drought betwen basketball and foitball.

I wonder if the modest savings from not having baseball gave the athletic dept the budget flexibility to extend CBR's contract....

Furman has a realistic chance to make it to Frisco...This is the first time I've thought that since the game was moved there...The 2023 Paladins are one of about eight or nine teams that could win the FCS title this coming fall.
I would be glad to just see us finish the year ranked in the FCS Top 25.

Been there, done that. 10th last year. Let's be better. We are capable.

OK.
I’m good with that.
Let’s get to 8th.
Let’s try to get *at least* to the place that UIW, Samford, Holy Cross, and William&Mary got to last year.
Those were 4 of the final 8 in the FCS Playoffs Bracket in 2022.
That would be great.
Should we be able to do that?

Winning a college Football game is really, really hard. Each and every one of them. Really, really hard.

So far, I've only checked the last 25 years, back to the 1998-1999 school year. This year, 2022-2023, is the ONLY year that both the football and the men's basketball teams have each achieved the winning percentage that they have this year, that is, approximately 77% for both teams.
I look forward to discovering (by my own research if necessary though I welcome input from others) how many, and which, other years we have had both teams at 77% W-L. I would guess that maybe the total number of such years would be less than 12, going all the way back another 100 years or so to whenever Furman had both football and basketball teams.
OK, this edit at 12:37 PM on 3/30/2023:
My guess was correct, however instead of anywhere near 12 years, it is only 2 years.
I find, going all the way back, only ONE OTHER YEAR, 1927-1928, in which BOTH TEAMS have finished with a 77% or higher W-L record.
In 1927-28 (95 years ago), football was 10-1, and basketball was 16-3.
The only years for men's basketball at 77% or above have been (total of 9 years - 3 of those in the last 25 years [actually all 3 of those 3 of the last 25 years coming in the last 3 years including 2022-23):
1929-30, 16-1
1930--31, 15-2
1931-32, 15-1
1952-53, 21-6
*1974-75, 22-7 (actually "only" 76%)
1979-80, 23-7
(Note that 6 of our 7 total appearance seasons, and our 1 previous win until the one on 3/16/2023, in the NCAA Tournament, were in the same decade as the 2 seasons immediately above.)
*2018-19, 25-8 (actually "only" 76%)
2019-20, 25-7
2022-23, 28-8
The only years for football at 77% or above have been (total of 21 years, 4 of those in the last 25 years):
1890, 2-0
1892, 1-0
1920, 9-1
1921, 7-2-1
1923, 9-2
1926, 8-1-1
1927, 10-1
1932, 8-1
1933, 6-1-2
1935, 8-1
1936, 7-2
1953, 7-2
1980, 9-1-1
1983, 10-2-2
1985, 12-2
1988, 13-2
1989, 12-2
2001, 12-3
2004, 10-3
2005, 11-3
2022, 10-3
AS STATED ABOVE:
I find, going all the way back, THERE HAS BEEN, BESIDES THIS YEAR, 2022-2023, only ONE OTHER YEAR, 1927-1928, in which BOTH TEAMS, football and men's basketball, have finished with a 77% or higher W-L record, in the entire history of Furman University.
Corrections welcome.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
