2023 Class Breakdown
With five RBs in the stable… no need for an RB in this class.

When you look at this class by position, a few things stand out.

Defense
This linebacker class could be an impact group; all three are physical and athletic.

The DB class is, on paper, a coup for the DINS. Two of these DBs were prior commits, one to Holy Cross and the other to Tulsa. Look at the length of this group (6-2, 6-1, 6-0, 5-11)

This DL class is a high-motor group; you have a plugger in Hernández.

DL
Bussey DE 6-3 252
Stoneking DT 6-3 245
Vincent DT 6-1 260
Hernández DT/NG 6-4 310
* Cook NG 5-11 271 (grad)

LB
Alabi BAN 6-2 240
Herbert LB 6-2 215
Earl LB 6-2 225

DB/CB
Burrell DB 6-0 190
Holmes DB 6-1 170
Dalton CB 6-2 185
Mason CB 5-11 160

On offense
The OL group is a prototype Hendrix OL class. A lean group all appear very athletic.

TE group has impressive height; seeing how these TEs develop under Verna and Roper will be interesting.

WR group includes a slot receiver that excels in yards after catch and two long-body receivers.

QB, our lone signee, comes from Cali—I want to know his story.

OFFENSE

OL
Balliew OL 6-5 265
Garner OL 6-5 280
Luna OL 6-3 275

TE
Chappell TE 6-5 250
Tormey TE 6-7 221

WR
Hinton WR/Slot 5-11 175
Hamilton WR 6-3 190
Holbrook WR 6-4 195

QB
Garcia Qb 6-3 190

Apparently the QB recruit came about from contacts Coach Roper has on the west coast.
Not sure if there's a connection (I assume there is), but Gissinger is also from Los Angeles County, California.

While Coach Roper is from Georgia, he played college ball at Oregon and Montana, so it wouldn't surprise me if he has some contacts in west coast coaching circles.

By my count, Furman has nine committed/signed PWOs. I believe they actually have to enroll to be included on the roster. Several of these had D2 and other PWO offers from FCS schools. I highlighted some that stood out to me.

Aiden Ruckh WR 6-3 215 | North Forsyth, GA
Jacob Hefner LS 6-3 235 | Creekview, GA
Miles Moss WR/ATH 6-0 175 | St Thomas Aquinas, FL
Tyler Hendley WR/SS 6-2 175 | Charlotte Latin, NC
Viny Jordan SS 5-11 185 | Weddington, NC
Tanner Schuck OLB/DE/TE 6-2 230 | Ravenwood, TN
Luke Smith MLB 6-2 200 | Brentwood, TN
Griffin Farmery LB/TE 6-1 210 | Leesburg, VA
Evan Stanley C/DL 6-1 270 | Leesburg, VA

Furman has also offered a spot to Matt Scarpa, an OL/DL from Hilton Head Academy.

With the exception of Ryan Miller’s departure, Furman’s biggest hole for the 2023 team appeared to be interior defensive linemen, which saw the loss of Cam Coleman and Seth Johnson - both big bodies.

They land an explosive interior pass rusher as a grad student in Sirod Cook. They also get a 6’4 310 lbs Army prep player in Hernandez, who will transfer in with freshman eligibility.

This appears to be a jam up signing class. We have a lot of Great DINS coming back. Hard to believe it is time for spring ball.
It’s not time for spring ball except at Furman, lol. I think FU will be thru before most schools start.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
