• The Future of Furman Football

Coming into this season and after the Samford loss, many were shouting about the demise and fall of the Furman football program. I'll add many were picking Furman to go no better than 6-5 or worse, 5-6.

Well, here we are at 9-2 and a solid number two behind a Samford team that has had a fantastic year. And, ding, ding, we have a home playoff game!

We all need to remember the leadership Clay Hendrix has shown this season. Furman brought in four new coaches in the off-season. All four hires have proven to be difference-makers.

Furman's not going away anytime soon. Furman will be in the conversation next year for the pre-season SoCon title.

I have no idea what will happen Saturday; I'm going to enjoy every minute of it, win or lose.
We're back, baby!

Could not have said it better myself! Looking back at the previous five seasons we have had flashes of success and times when we all said can Furman make it back on a national level ? I think we can say yes. I’m not saying we will play for a Natty this year, but I do believe it’s possible. CCH got his Oline to the level it needs to be. 3 All SoCon 1st team! Finally, a qb that is a dual threat and will be coming back next year. Also, great assistant hires that understand what CCH wants and the difficulty a school like Furman presents when recruiting student athletes. I agree with Astro, we have turned the corner, and the future is bright! Let’s go take care of Elon and plan a trip to Texas next week.

For the past few years, when the offense came on the field, I expected a 3 and out but hoped for some big play to Miller or a series of helpful penalties or busted coverages. Now when the offense comes on the field I get excited. We aren’t where we want to be, but it always seems like we have a plan. To me that OC hire is appearing to be a stroke of genius. And it is probably a good thing to have a real O line coach. I think we did without last year for some reason.

It’s only 15 minutes San Antonio airport to UIW stadium.

I think I predicted 5-6, maybe worse. I am glad to be wrong in this case.
I agree that we may be back.
… 2010 through 2016 was a long slog, with 2013 being a highlight.
… compare the 6-year W-L records “2011 through 2016” (=39.1%, 27-42) and “2017 through 2022 to date” (=61.5% to date, 40-25 to date, even with Colgate cancelling a 2018 game we could have won and even with Wofford cancelling a 2020 game we could have won).
… I imagine that winning 61.5% of games is considerably higher than the overall Furman Football history %age of games won - all years combined going back to 1896 or whenever. I’m sure someone has that %age and can tell us; but my guess is approximately 49.5%.
Furman’s 200th anniversary is 2026. May we keep the improvements increasing in every area, including football !!!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!!!

I have run the numbers — oddly, GSP to San Antonio is about the same as GSP to Sacramento.
Around $500 round-trip.
$383.96 from ATL via Southwest Air

HERE'S MY ANSWER, FOUND ON PAGE 152 OF THE 2022 FURMAN FOOTBALL book.
Going back to 1889, the all-time W-L-T record is 625-493-38, 0.557
We are 0.615 over the last 6 years, compared to 0.495 over the 6 years before that; and we will end up with 0.750 for this year at worst - so that 0.615 over the last 6 years will go up.
We may finish 0.750 this year at worst.
We could finish 0.875 this year at best.
Beat Elon.

Years in which we have won each of the following final numbers of games:
9 2022*, 2000, 1999
10 2004, 1983, 1927
11 2005
12 2001, 1989, 1985
13 1988

We have gotten to 9 or more wins only 9 times in our 117 years of playing football.
The number of seasons in which we have won more than 9 games in our 117 years of playing football is only 8
If we somehow win Saturday, we will have 10 wins. We will have gotten to that number only 8 times in our 117 years of playing football.
Also, note that we have had winning seasons 5 of the last 6 years, and the one we did not have a winning season was the Covid-shorted 2020 season when we were 3-4.

Trending upward.

Last Southern Conference Championship In 2018 (3 teams). Two in the last ten years (2013 & 2018). Hate it Mercer could not get in the end zone on 6 plays inside the 5 on Saturday. One Championship for CCH in 6 years.

Playoffs is where we really really need to improve.

Last playoff win Furman over Elon 28-27 in 2017. Two playoff wins since 2005 (in the last 16 years). In 2005 when Ingle Martin slipped on the ice in loss to App State, who would have imagined that it would take us 16 years to win the # of playoff games we won in 2005. Not me.

Time to beat Elon and others.

Thanks but certainly not worth the hassle, time, gas etc to save $100 so I will be usng GSP. We are getting a little ahead of ourselves, aren’t we?

Affirm is a good man. Picks low but glad to be wrong and big enough to admit it.

I admit I thought 7-4 or so. Glad to be wrong.

GoFurman. Win!!! Honestly I could take losing to UIW a lot more than Elon because at least we woulda won one and the talk on the AGS etc. Also I want SoCon to do well and fear Samford qb really hurt his hand on game end v Mercer. Durnn

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
