Matt Sochovka has moved to #7.

So, we'll likely have a #0 and #7 starting on the defensive interior. That's new.

Confirmed on report and practice schedule. Let's get it going! This has the potential to be a breakout year.
Reviewing the pre-season notes, this might be the first time in Hendrix's tenure where I felt like we really were returning a "veteran" group.

Last season, I think, we graduated 13 seniors. This season, we have 5 graduate students, 1 5th year, 8 redshirt seniors, 6 true seniors, and another 16 redshirt juniors.

That's a group that's played a lot of football.

Remember the good ole days when certain positions had a certain group of numbers to wear and not just any #?

There are still player numbering rules…

PART 1, RULE 1, SECTION 4. Players and Playing Equipment
Recommended Numbering
ARTICLE 1. It is strongly recommended that offensive players be numbered according to the following diagram that shows one of many offensive formations:
Image
Players’ Numbering
ARTICLE 2. a. All players shall be numbered 0 through 99. Any number preceded by the digit zero such as “07” or “00” is illegal.
b. No two players of the same team shall participate in the same down wearing identical numbers.
c. Markings in the vicinity of the numbers are not permitted.
PENALTY [a-c]—Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot [S23].
d. When a player enters the game after changing their jersey number, the player must report to the referee. The officiating crew informs the opposing head coach and the referee announces the change. A player who enters the game after changing their number and does not report commits a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. [S27]. (A.R. 1-4-2-I)
PENALTY [d]—Live-ball foul. 15 yards from the previous spot [S27]. Flagrant offenders shall be ejected [S47].

…just none on Defense and the conventions to which we had become accustomed flew out the window along with amateurism in collegiate athletics.

I see FU is a consensus pick to finish in 4th place in the SoCon. That would be very disappointing.

I agree. Top 3 is a must. Top 2 is making the important plays and great coaching. First place takes some breaks to go our way.

The number rules in college football were archaic. The only real reason to have them is not to confuse offensive linemen with players that can be downfield on passing players.

Some programs use single digit numbers for DL as a reward because it’s unique. Furman may be doing that - it might not be coincidental that the two players with single digits along the defensive line are two veteran players.

Jackal—thanks for posting the Rouser pdf.

Reading up on Jace, I had forgotten his first action last year came late against Mercer and his first start the next week against Wofford.

I’m not the most optimistic guy around, but I’m pretty sure we are way better than that.

The Paladins finished worse than 39th in two of the past three seasons. There's no reason for someone objective to expect anything but more of the same.

Furman fans are aware of certain factors that offer hope - new OC for instance - but as of now, that's all it is. Others will notice if things actually do turn around on the field.

One guy did point out that everyone is high on ETSU and FU lost to them by 4. Another guy did point out that Davidson was too high, non-scholly should be closer to 50. Pretty sure we would beat Davidson rather handily. With that said its time to see some results on the field,
