That is surprising. Maybe somebody checked into player eligibility. :D

Wonder if these departures hastened Sanders' retirement.

or vice versa?

Odd that a coach in his mid 50s who took a program to an 11 win season and the best season in decades would just immediately retire.

My dad always says that if something doesn't make sense, you don't know the whole story.

…and

Fowlkes got the publicity cuz he’s an 8th year Sr (citizen), but Manuel, by a good ways, was the better of the 2. Has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Bummer for ETSU. They win their first playoff game in 25 years and within days lose their coach and three best players.

Totally agree! The FCS "blue chips" have become the new juco transfers. The only way a FCS program gets an Ingle Martin type transfer would be a situation where a guy is buried on the depth chart of a program and has yet to showcase himself.

It is difficult to know where it all leads.

Admittedly, though, there aren't many "Ingle Martin-type" transfers in FCS football even before the rules change. Randy Moss transferred to Marshall. Joe Flacco to Delaware. Ingle Martin to Furman.

Outside of those three, I can't think of too many blue chip type players that transferred to 1AA/FCS and just lit the world on fire. Ingle Martin was a once-in-a-generation type thing.

Eric Kresser - Florida to Marshall (Moss’ QB)
Vad Lee - GT to JMU - FCS All-American

…there are more…in the past.

They exist. They were rare even when the rules allowed for them.

Rare at FU. Not that rare overall across FCS. The rules still allow for them, but the rules have now changed to point the arrow in the other direction.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage

GoPaladins.com is not affiliated with Furman University or its athletics programs.
