MLB Teams all play 162 games.

At any point in an MLB season, when Team A has the most wins in the division, 1 more than Team B, and the same number of losses as Team B, we don’t say “Team B is in the top spot in the division.” Instead, we say “Team B is a 1/2 game out of 1st place” or “Team B is in 2nd place, a 1/2 game behind Team A.” Right?

Why would we phrase it any differently for SoCon Football?

To not be a “stretch,” the Tweet would need to have said something along the lines of “Furman battles ETSU for, potentially, a share of the top spot in the Southern Conference”

Don’t get me wrong - said I loved it - FUBeAR majors in “PARTIALLY TRUE, POSSIBLY MISLEADING.” It’s his daily stock-in-trade.

Watched a bit more.

Key for Furman defensively is to get Quay Holmes on the ground. He's a similar physical build to Devin Wynn, and, like Wynn, tends to run angry. A lot of his yards come after contact and he's not going to stop moving until the whistle blows. Gotta tackle.

We've also gotta get hands on Huzzie. The only WR in SoCon play that averages more catches per game than Huzzie is Jakob Herres at VMI.

In SoCon play, Huzzie and Holmes are responsible for roughly half of ETSU's offense.

Offensively, I want to see us maintain some possession. Our defense will keep us in the game, but we cannot afford to have those stretches where we go three or four consecutive drives without a first down and just keep punting it back to them.
Huzzie is scary. Holmes too. But as good as the RBs are I saw Huzzie make some scary plays at times in games in the past

I’d ask the OL which 5 plays they feel really confident they can execute and do those a whole bunch.
I just saw a Head Coach honored for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame by doing exactly that.

Well…he didn’t exactly ask us which plays we felt really confident we could execute. He told us which 5 we better be able to execute perfectly if we wanted to wear an <F> on our helmets…and later a stylized <NSC>…I guess.
AGREE. Pick a few things and do them extraordinarily well !! I don’t care if it’s boring. Just win. Beat ETSU.

That said, I have found it slightly odd how little we have used 3 of our fastest players - DBell and 17 KT (he seemed to have an extra dimension) and Wayne Anderson. Maybe it’s what we have been pursuing which is straight ahead runs with more power. That wouldn’t fit KT etc. Still, if you get a LB in coverage I would think we might throw to these guys ? Maybe like Huzzie for ETSU we find that even w a LB on these prior guys .. that Miller ( awesome!) and Harris and DeLuca are still better even w a true DB on them?

FYI - ETSU has had some good DB play I believe

ETSU game notes: https://cdn.streamlinehosting.net/etsub ... _Week8.pdf

Just a quick glance, their offensive line is going to be good. They've the top OL from the spring at LT. They aren't huge in the middle, but the OTs are big fellas (6'4 335 and 6'6 330). Lot of experience across the board there.

Defensively, they are strong unit. Admittedly, they are not quite as physically big as I thought they'd be. The biggest DL on the two deep is 6'0 275.

It also looks like their base defense is a more "traditional" 3-4 look. Their 4 linebackers look more like linebackers (6'2 220+) than a couple of linebackers mixed in with hybrid safeties.

I also note that one of their starting CBs is listed at 5'9 150. There are some really good CBs out there that are undersized, however there could be a possibility for Furman to work an advantage as we have a couple a big physical players at WR. Maybe not so much in the passing game, but in the run game. A 150 lbs corner is going to give up 50 pounds to Shiflett and 70 to Miller, both of whom can run.

Speaking of traditional 3-4 looks, I'm interested to see if Furman rolls out one as well.

For most of Hendrix's tenure, Furman has gone with the 2 ILBs and two OLBs that were a mix of pass rusher (Bandit) and pass coverage (Spur).

ETSU, like Citadel, has a strong run game. They have big OTs. Furman did well last week using McKoy and Miller as SPURs, which gave the defense a big athletic defensive front against a tough running team. McKoy, of course, is a good pass rusher in his own right and a difficult cat to run around. Having McKoy opposite Hope is a pretty strong defensive look for Furman.

It looks like the coaches are comfortable with our interior linebacker rotation. I suppose Gilby will be back. Kuzemka has played well. McCormick and Scianna have looked strong. Having quality players rotating at those two positions allows Furman to free up McKoy, Miller, and DiMaggio to create havoc from other parts of the field.

In more obvious passing situations or when ETSU goes to their 3 WR looks, bring in Richards and (if available) Chizik.

From the Chatt. Time Free Press on Tuesday… https://gomocs.com/news/2021/10/27/foo ... urday.aspx

“Both the Mocs and Paladins are 4-3 on the campaign overall. Chattanooga enters 3-1 in the league, tied with VMI one-half game behind early leaders ETSU and Mercer at 4-1.”

Not a LISTING of SoCon football standings & not exactly “games back,” but a sentence about SoCon football standings and uses the term “…game behind.”

I've really only ever seen fractions of "games back" used in baseball, because of course, everything in baseball is some data point.

In SoCon football, every team plays every other team, so I guess the only reason to argue is to determine who is in first place at this very moment, which really doesn't matter. What matters is who is in first place after 8 games.
