Good OOC matchup.

Driving distance, OVC Conference, fertile recruiting area, winnable.....check, check, check....

I remember the '75 game in Sirrine. Watched it from the visitors side with my soon to be Rotary Bowl Champion youth football team. They had a real purty cheerleader named Pam. At least that's what she told us her name was.
I am love her.

Have to give credit where credit is due. There's been a lot of complaints about FCS non-conference schedules over the years (I think rightfully so), but I couldn't be more pleased with the additions over the last several months ... North Carolina A&T, Tennessee Tech, William & Mary, Colgate ... those are exactly the type of matchups we need. A big congrats and thanks to the AD and coaching staff for making them happen.

Agree, all but Colgate since the new AD arrived. Colgate series has been on future schedules for a long time. Looks like the Colgate series may have been cancelled or moved. We were supposed to play Colgate at home on Sept 11 2021 and now we are at Tenn. Tech the same day. It also makes only 5 home games instead of 6 for 2021. The 2023 home game with Tenn. Tech gives us 5 home games so both 2021 and 2023 ooc is complete. Anyone heard if the Colgate series has been cancelled?

We need to have schools like Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, Richmond, on our schedule. I’ll keep saying it.

Agreed. Winnable games against schools with similar athletics and academics. Very important.

Private.
Similar size to us.
Better than us academically (per rankings /ratings).
FCS.
Just playing them improves or sustains our stature and reputation.
“Winnable” is important but less so than the other characteristics above. Even so, what schools, if any, can anyone think of that are like such schools that we would have football games that would NOT be winnable? I cannot think of any. In fact, there are very few other such schools period. Wofford of course; Lafayette, Lehigh, maybe Abilene Christian (though Lehigh & ACU both may be considerably bigger than us in student enrollment).
We should also play Villanova & Georgetown in FB, but they are both bigger schools and different athletically due to basketball.
Samford & Mercer come to mind, but they are both bigger schools.
(Of course, we play Wofford, Samford, & Mercer anyway.)

I've just come to expect our seasons to be 5 home games in a normal 11 game season, assuming we avoid playing d2 teams. 1 FBS game which will always be away and then 10 FCS games with "home and home" agreements in and out of conference.

If we embraced playing D2 or NAIA teams we could probably get to 6 home games as we wouldn't have to return any games but that's not the kind of schedule I think we want, although in a 12 game season I'm ok with that.

Don't have an answer for you, but that's a good catch on the Colgate/Tenn Tech switch. Assuming FBSschedules.com is accurate, maybe they move the home Colgate game to 2024? We actually still need 2 games for that year since it's a 12-game slate. Preferably 2 home games. Also still need a home game in 2022, but besides those 2 years, we are all set through 2025.

The problem is all of those are plane trips for them or us so they are really not feasible except maybe every once in a while.

Well Richmond would be no more of a plane trip than Cookeville would be - would it ? [Edit: looked it up, 6 h, 395 mi to Richmond; 4.5 h, 270 mi to Cookeville; so Not TOO much difference.]. Georgetown and Villanova would be plane trips, but “convenient “ ones. AND none of the schools I’ve mentioned as having on our schedule would, in my thinking, necessitate a plane trip expense by Furman more than once every 2 seasons. If we cannot afford that, maybe we just cannot afford football period.
