Pioneer Football League member (now former member) Jacksonville University (Florida) has eliminated football. The decision was announced Monday December 3, 2019. The expense of having football and the negative impact of that expense on the other varsity sports were cited as the major reasons. The decision was described as being for the overall good of the university. The university spent “12 to 15 months”
exploring all options for what they would do about their football program. Dropping football was not a pre-determined outcome. JU has 4,222 students. Without football, they will now continue 7 NCAA varsity sports for men and 10 for women. They also have varsity sailing, “sporting clays, skeet, and trap team”, and JAX Esports (competitive gaming).

A friend of mine played football at Emory & Henry. Their version of playing an FBS school was when they played Pioneer League Davidson. As he has explained to me, Davidson would bring in scholarship athletes for track (or perhaps even another sport) who would also play football. So in a sense, it's not purely non scholarship.

I just thought that would be an interesting thing to add to the discussion. I'm sure they do still have considerable talent even without football scholarships to offer.

Funny how it's never too expensive when the football team is winning.

This reads like comedy : They also have varsity sailing, “sporting clays, skeet, and trap team”, and JAX Esports (competitive gaming).

I'm surprised they don't have varsity couch sitting.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
