This is what I can't understand about college offenses in 2026.
The goal of the zone blocking scheme is to basically solve the math problem - there are more tacklers than you have guys available to block them. So, you design plays to leave guys unblocked and try to otherwise neutralize them.
Here's Samford on a 3rd and goal. They've got all sorts of beef up front with TEs, extra lineman, etc.
The inside zone scheme leaves the end man on the line of scrimmage unblocked. That happens to be Joshua Stoneking. Samford throws all that muscle to the right side of their line, but the running back never even gets to the line because THEY DON"T BLOCK THE SOCON'S TOP DEFENSIVE LINEMAN.
Dudes get paid a lot of money to call college offenses. They are trying to blast the ball up the middle and just scheme it up so the most feared defender in the Southern Conference just isn't blocked. He, predictably, runs in and tackles the running back for a loss.
I guess I'm just too dumb to understand what they are trying to do. This isn't to pick on Samford. I see this all over college football.
