Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina University Director of Athletics Alex Gary announced Friday a leadership change for Catamount football. Mark Speir will not be returning as head coach.

"After a thorough evaluation of the program, I feel that it is time we move in a different direction," said Gary. "We are grateful for Coach Speir's nine years of dedicated service and efforts on behalf of the Catamount football program."

A national search for the 14th head football coach at WCU will begin immediately.

Assuming they could afford to make it worth his while, I'd go after Wachenheim from VMI.....

Heck no. The man is a football expert. I can’t imagine why WCU has done this. Nobody should ever fault an expert.

I kinda suspect Davidson is cheating. Where are they finding good football players who will pay Davidson prices?

Not quite to Ivy League levels, but Davidson can get very creative with non-athletic scholarships. Was cheaper than in-state GA State schools when they were done totaling up FUBeAR Jr’s ‘offer’ there...about 10 years ago though - may be more (or less) creative now - not sure.

I think they should hire our oc.

Looks like they made a great hire. Won d2 national championship at Valdosta St. in 2018.
