Crowding out

Was thinking about the dynamic how football and men’s basketball is literally crowding out other sports.

It’s the only places that an athletic department can generate significant revenue, enough to fund other sports....until the bar gets raised so high to compete in football and basketball that schools have to cut the other sports to “keep up with the Joneses” in the way of coaches salaries, facilities and student athlete amenities.

It’s what’s happening at FU but for a real obvious example just look up the road to Boone.

They are in the middle of a $55m football facility upgrade, and spent who knows how much to sponsor Kurt Busch’s NASCAR ride....but just had to tell a bunch of soccer tennis and track athletes that the school could no longer afford to compete in their sports.

How long before most schools reduce to the D1 minimum of 14 (I think) sports?

Is there another solution for Furman?
