Among the many recruits to visit UVa so far this season, DMV native Cooper Bowser has seen his recruitment pick up more and more. That’s given the 6-foot-10 forward a lot to think since arriving at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.

“My year is going great at Sunrise,” Bowser told CavsCorner. “We are playing well as a team and I like how I have been playing. I have gotten faster and stronger and that has helped my development which has helped my recruitment pick up. Overall I am having a lot of fun with my team and hopefully we can win a national championship.”

Bowser was in attendance for the Wahoos victory against Albany on December 28 and came away extremely impressed, especially with the time he spent with Tony Bennett.

“My visit to Virginia was amazing, he recalled. “I was able to go visit with my family and watch them play. I got to meet and talk with the coaching staff and see John Paul Jones Arena.

“All of the facilities are very nice and it was really cool to see the team play in person,” he added. “After the game I got to sit down with Coach Bennett and it was really amazing being able to talk with him.”

Bowser left that conversation with Bennett clear eyed about some things.

“His message to me was don’t worry about the noise and just keep working through everything,” Bowser said. “He told me they have heard a lot of great things about me and he thinks I am very talented and believes my ceiling is very high. Hearing that from one of the best coaches in college basketball history was really special.”

Before speaking with Bennett, Bowser had been talking a lot with Associate Head Coach, Jason Williford, who has built a great relationship with him thus far.

“Coach Williford was the first coach that reached out to me from Virginia and has been the main contact,” he said. “He said they want a forward that can come in and rebound and play above the rim and to also be able to stretch the floor, shoot 3s and really be an important piece in their offense.”

Virginia has not extended an offer to Bowser yet but he thinks if he continues to improve, one could be coming his way.

“I think I just have to show consistency,” he explained. “They like me because I am an athletic forward and I can stretch the floor and play above the rim. They think I can make a lot of plays that fit well at the type of level they play at.”

Bowser has ties to Virginia already so visiting Grounds was nothing new to him but learning about Bennett’s program was something new that he learned during his visit.

“I knew a lot because my uncle went to Virginia and played football there so I already knew a lot about it and have been there before,” he said. “One thing I did learn though were the basketball pillars which Tony Bennett brought to the program, I learned a lot about them.”

Right now Bowser is in no hurry to make a decision and doesn’t plan to wind down his recruitment until May as he is still hearing from a lot of different schools

“I have been able to visit Virginia, Virginia Tech and George Washington recently and have been talking to Maryland, Texas A&M, Richmond and Boise State,” he said. “With the amount of schools I have been talking to, I don’t plan on making a decision until the late signing period in May.”

Player: Cooper Bowser
Class: 2023
School: Sunrise Christian PG
Height: 6’10

Over at Sunrise Christian, 2023 6’10 Cooper Bowser has been a name popping up a little bit more these days, as his game and versatility have caught some eyes of college coaches. We spoke recently to him about how his game has improved and his experience at Sunrise, while also talking about his recent visit to Virginia and which other schools have been staying strong with him.

Phenom: How has everything been going basketball-wise for you so far?
Bowser: As far as basketball, everything has been going well at Sunrise Christian, getting better daily and winning with my team.

Phenom: How has it been there and how has it helped you with your game so far?
Bowser: It has been a great experience at Sunrise. It has helped my game by being able to gain strength in the weight room daily and just improving daily at practice or during individual workouts with my coaches on the court.

Phenom: How would you best describe your game?
Bowser: I would describe my game as a versatile stretch 4 who can shoot and defend multiple positions.

Phenom: Saw you recently visited Virginia. How was that for you and what kind of interest have they expressed your way?
Bowser: That visit was amazing. I was able to meet assistant coaches and also tour the campus and see the facilities. Also watch a game and after the game, I was able to sit down and talk to Coach Bennett for 30 minutes, which was great. They expressed interest; I’ve been in contact with Coach Williford who said he likes my skill level and how diverse my game is.

Phenom: How long have you been in touch with them?
Bowser: I would say the past four months.

Phenom: What other schools have you been staying strong with these days? And which schools have offered?
Bowser: The schools I have been in contact with the most would be Virginia, Akron, Virginia Tech, and Boise State. I’ve been offered by Howard, Jacksonville State, North Carolina A&T, and LUI Brooklyn.

Phenom: Did UVA or any other schools that haven’t offered mention anything about their interest in offering you down the road?
Bowser: I have stated to programs with interest that I will sign in the late signing period, so they will be able to build a connection with me and just take it from there.

Phenom: Any other schools you have visited?
Bowser: I also visited Virginia Tech and George Washington unofficially, and Texas A&M. George Washington was a great visit. I was able to talk to and meet the whole staff, tour the campus, and talk about how I could fit into their program. Virginia Tech was great; I was able to tour the campus, see the facility, and have breakfast with Coach Jones and Coach Webster. Texas A&M was also great. I was able to watch a practice and tour the facilities.

Phenom: Any other visits scheduled?
Bowser: None scheduled.

Phenom: Curious about what you think you could provide to a program with your game?
Bowser: I think I could provide a defensive presence and versatility, being able to play the 4 r the 5 at the next level.

How do we have another scholarship? Mike, Slawson, and Joe were all on scholarship. we have 2 freshmen and 1 transfer. Was Rhett Lister on scholarship? Could have sworn he was a walk-on.

Lawrence? Hasn’t played much but 2 years left and it’s hard to see him gaining much more PT.

Then how do we have an available scholarship? Eddrin takes Mike's scholarship Tommy takes Slawson's and PJ takes Joe's. Super pumped none the less. He brings much-needed size to our roster!!
