UNCG won the first game mainly because they shot 41 more FTs than the Paladins. That was double the number we shot. They scored 16 more points at the line than we did. How much of that was because of the particular officiating crew? I haven't looked at every game, but that is a lot more than most teams have shot against us. We were leading a good part of that game, especially the second half - not a situation where teams are usually fouling a lot.

I can top that. I saw Elvis there June 30th, 1976. Saw others since then. The last being KISS right before the Pandemic.

In NO way does Elvis top the double-billing of Billy Joel and the Beach Boys. Especially considering that was a year after the Piano Man album came out and Elvis was already his hefty bedazzled version by then.

Just one music aficionado's opinion.

Elvis topped everyone. You had to be there. I’ve seen at least 75 concerts from the Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsten to Garth Brooks, no one ever topped Elvis.

FUBeAR is a huge fan of The King, but this is EXACTLY what FUBeAR was gonna say…BJ+BB > (o+f)EP

To add a little color…yeah, Piano Man (single & album) was out … had been out for a while, but the single only made it to #25 on the charts…so Billy Joel really hadn’t become “Billy Joel” yet. That didn’t happen until he released “The Stranger” album in ‘77. FUBeAR thinks the interesting thing is/was how different, musically, the 2 acts are/were and that Billy Joel was clearly the Opener for the “Stars”…not dual headliners, by any means. But, FUBeAR remembers really enjoying Billy Joel that evening and The Beach Boys as well. The crowd seemed surprised at how good Billy Joel was and they appreciated it.

Heckuva show for $5…$27.20 in today’s BidenBucks…still a good price when people are paying tens of thousands to see Taylor Swift ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Speaking of the Greensboro Coliseum, Billy Packer passed away yesterday.

Packer called many, many ACC Tournament games in that great venue. Hopefully the good peeps at UNC-G will do some sort of tribute to him on Saturday. He was one of the best to ever do it!

And…surely, to everyone’s surprise, FUBeAR has a Billy Packer story …actually several, but we’ll kinda roll ‘em up into 1 (or so)…

FUBeAR had the pleasure of working fairly closely with Billy Packer a few times in the early/mid 80’s when FUBeAR was doing some part-time grunt work for CBS Sports in NC, SC, and GA. Favorite job was doing his magnetic basketballs shots taken/shots made board that he would use in his halftime analysis…that ‘job’ put FUBeAR front row mid-court (and gettin’ paid to be there) for an NCAA Regional Final in ‘84.

Packer was great at what he did, was exceptionally nice to the dumba$$ little people around him (that was FUBeAR), and funny as all heck. Really, really liked him after expecting, before meeting him, that he would be a real jerk. That said, he was not very good at being politically correct.

Hopefully, FUBeAR won’t get killed by TV Sports media secret agents for sharing this info, but at CBS they used to do a ‘secret’ live 15-20 minute “show” that started about half an hour before an actual broadcast. They called it “On the Dish” and was only available in the headsets and in the truck…and to their colleagues that knew how to pull it down off ‘the dish.’ This was before really anyone had home dishes. Crazy intros describing the upcoming game with absolutely no regard for FCC regulations. Hilarious fake interviews of (usually fake) Players & (usually fake) Coaches also with absolutely no regard for FCC regulations. Interviews of real (female) cheerleaders that the cheerleaders were told might be used at some point on the broadcast and then consisted mostly of double entendre-type questions…and the cameraman armed with a 2nd, smaller “handi-cam” that he held down by his side and aimed & focused…well…not ever at her face. These became legendary and they tried to top the prior week every week. It was a hoot that would get every single one (which was ALL of the cast & crew) involved fired today.

Anyway, RIP Billy. You’re a legend!

Great stories FUBeAR. I would bet there are no tapes saved of those "On the Dish" shows or we would have heard about them by now. And that is a good thing.
