With Malachi Smith gone Pro now, every team in the SoCon outside of Furman and Samford currently looks pretty weak

Now we see why Smith did not announce he was following Paris to USC, he knew he was turning Pro

UTC looking pretty bad for next year, lost coach and tons of players

I think the rule is now that they can return to school if not drafted.

Seems he is going Pro no matter what though, Europe or something, you can tell by the way the release is worded that he is done with college ball

As long as he doesn’t hire an agent.

Smith told the Chattanooga paper today he is going Pro this year no matter what, so even if he goes undrafted he will find some other form of Pro ball to play, so he's gone

Here is a breakdown of our search for 1 transfer:

We are clearly looking for a guard, anywhere from 6'0 to 6'6

We have looked at a few P5 guards that never got much PT but might have upside, and from only good academic schools such as Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Virginia

We have looked at Mid Major guards that have proven scoring ability in the 10ppg range to this point

We have looked at DII guards that have proven scoring ability in the 18-22ppg range

Still hoping we land the right guy for us!

I’d go with group 2 or 3. Might really scrutinize 3 pt % since we seem to be pretty married to the 3 dependent offense.

Which brings up a question. Will we be able to run the same type offense next year without Hunter and Garrison? I sure hope so because I believe that is the only way we can win consistently. We have to make a lot of threes.

A few interesting players that have popped up in the news lately. I don't know if we have any interest or if the players have any interest in Furman.

Nick Martinelli 6'7" forward from Glenbrook South HS in the Chicago suburbs has decommited from Elon after their head coach quit to be an assistant on the new staff at Duke. I don't think we had an offer originally for Martinelli, but he had 12 offers before picking Elon including several schools we often recruit against like Belmont, Rice, and Bucknell. He had a very good senior season in 4A basketball and was named to the Chicago Sun-Times all-state first team.

Will Richard, 6'5" wing, who was a freshman starter at Belmont this year has entered the transfer portal. He is from the Atlanta area. I think he was the first player we offered (back in 2019) for this year's freshman class.
Mason Madsen a 6'4" guard for Cincinnati is transferring. Furman was one of about 20 schools that were after him when he was in HS. His numbers were down this year under new coach Wes Miller compared to his freshman year.

Jackson Sivills is transferring to Wofford from Murray State.

I do think that if we are going to get really good we need to be way, way better inside. We can put together a team that wins the regular season, but still be out of luck because of 1 bad shooting night in the tourney. We almost got there this year but only because Chat couldn’t shoot at all.

William and Mary transfer Conner Kochera has picked Davidson as his next stop.

I claim no inside info but Nick Martinelli, who I mentioned a few posts back says that Furman is one of the schools to contact him since he backed off his commitment to Elon.

Carson McCorkle, a 6'3" guard transfering from Virginia has narrowed his list to Wofford or William and Mary. Wofford has also contacted Martinelli In fact a list of transfers the Terriers haven't contacted might be shorter than a list of the ones they have. Sam Godwin, who just transfered out has announced for Oklahoma.

Neftali Alvarez, who left Mercer, says he will transfer to Southern Miss.
