He deserves $1 billion ;)
One Championship in 7 years refutes that statement.
Best basketball coach we’ve ever had.
Coach Joe Williams respectfully acknowledges Coach Richey’s success, but begs to disagree with this assertion, at this juncture…

Coach Yrs G W L W-L% CREG CTRN NCAA
Joe Williams 8 229 142 87 .620 3 5 5
Bob Richey 8 261 181 80 .693 1 1 1

…and Coach Williams notably led Jacksonville University to the final game of the 1970 NCAA tournament.

…and Coach Williams was one of only 25 head coaches to have led three different teams to the NCAA tournament.

…and Coach Williams is a 1994 inductee of the Jacksonville University athletic hall of fame, and a 1996 inductee of the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Great coach, yes.
And then he left.................

Richey is still here and cooking mane, give him a bit more time and we will have plenty more NCAA tourney appearances for you to bask in ;)
OK …

“Potentially, the best basketball coach we’ve ever had, IF he can win multiple SoCon Regular Season and Tournament titles in the next very few years (really in the next 3 or 4 seasons in a row), and, at any point in his Coaching career, lead a Team (not, necessarily, Furman) to the NCAA Championship game.”

FUBeAR can live with that fair & accurate statement vs. recency-biased hyperbole.

Not exactly so, I mean winning a higher percentage of games and more overall games is a plus for Richey....
He already has as many NCAA tourney wins (1), so getting just one more win there gives him an edge in that department......
He got the program ranked in the Top 25 for the first time ever (and can do it again)....
So its not like he has to get exactly as many tourney appearances to be better, that's not at all the case.......
Getting a renovated arena for the program is a big plus as well........

Williams also had a 9-18 season, something Richey has not come close too, lol.....
A couple of those Furman teams under Williams were pretty mediocre in 1971 and 1978, but just so happened to get hot in the SoCon tourney, so was he a great SoCon tourney coach, yeah one of the best ;)

Except that Joe Williams cheated, throwing money around like crazy to get players to Furman. The story goes that had he stayed another year, Furman would have been on probation.

Fair points. You feelin’ OK?

So…Coach Richey is, overall, closer to passing Coach Williams to become Furman’s “best basketball Coach we’ve ever had” than FUBeAR realized. Good on him. Still gotta put some more Championships on the board quickly though. If not, he’s just gotta stay in the “one of the best” tier.

So, Coach Williams was an innovator; ahead of his time. He saw the future of Furman & College Basketball and made it a reality in his era. Seems like that should be added to his “plus column.”

As to keeping Richey, I agree that he is going to open Timmons and put one year, likely two into it. He will want to go out on a good season if he goes at all.

I would worry about the VCU job if we were not about to open Timmons. For almost 25 years, that job has been a Saturn 5 launching pad to high/high major jobs - Odom/UVA, Rhoads/Penn State, Wade/LSU, Shaka/Texas, Grant/Bama, Capel/OU... There is going to be an absolute dogfight for that job. I wonder if Niko is going to try to get it?

WVA job would also worry a little. Villanova might have worried if JD had gone but he stayed.

Longer term...

I really like the fact that Clemson just extended. Given the family ties to SC/Greenville, that job worries me the most.

I worry a little about SC as Paris had the one good year last year but the other two have been bad. If they tank hard next year, could change. Lot of Chickent probably lamenting 14 SEC teams in tourney and they are not one of. But I think SC will throw big money and aim high if they move.

A school like Liberty could be appealing on values. The Davidson job just got really attractive with all that cash. Richmond is a decent job.

For now, I am going to relax and enjoy another season of Bob and see what is in store. Go Dins!

Coach Medved’s wife was born and raised in West Virginia. That said, the coach that just left openly complained about the lack of financial support for the basketball program. Seems like the West Va. job is going to be a tough one to fill.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
