Great year, 25 wins, played in conf. title game, made post season play. That's a great Furman BB year. Period.

If we want to advance further, two things strike me about the last two games, and they are directly related.

We were out physicaled in both games, and NTU was just more athletic. We really got physically pushed around in both games.

With respect to physicality, that is just something you see more of the deeper you get in post season play. Refs swallow whistles for the most part and it benefits the team who is doing more pushing off, hard screening and bodying shots.

Athletically, I think that NTU's defensive intensity is unusual - they manned us up for 40 min with no fall off and PJay only got 8 shots from behind the arc. But the story was they got many, many more easy shots on offense because they were able to get the ball inside, drive and shoot, and drew more fouls. They shot 20-34 inside 3 and 11-13 from the line. We shot 16-24 and 2-4. They got a lot more easy shots than we did and made them. We need to work on our inside presence, and it would be great to have a swing or a post type player who could get his own shot. We became a catch and shoot team there at the end and when we either weren't hitting them or had someone athletic and physical enough to push through our screens and really deny and defend our 3 balls, we did not have much of a second act. We had two bigs who both played over 25 min in the game and took 4 shots all night. When Nick/PJay/House shoot 7-24 from 3, the points have to come from somewhere else.

Where was Johnston the 2nd half?

I was really impressed with Bronson. Led us in scoring and gave us the athleticism and penetration we need. His development is critical to next season.

Bronson and House give us a nice nucleus. Molnar has the build to be a banger. Really need Bowser to continue to develop his offensive game and gain some weight, same for Johnston. Need a SG and an athletic big who can get his own shot in the portal and we will be very, very good again.

It is understandable why WF & SC would turn down NIT.
Doesn’t even have semi’s & finals at MSG anymore. Get to go see Butler’s gym.
It is also understandable why Furman would “need” to go to NIT if invited to have at least some sort of excuse for a banner (really????) this year, and to have something additional to keep players and recruits interested.
… How much money did we lose by going to NIT?
We can hope it’s worth it “in the long run”.
(And if it makes Coach Richey even a little happy [it must], then it IS worth it. If it keeps more good recruits and players interested in being at Furman[it may], then it IS worth it.)
… Two years since NCAA.
Surely hoping we will get back there in 2026.
What will it take? Obviously winning SoCon tourney. Or maybe we could sneak in if we lost in SoCon finals and had an undefeated record otherwise, or maybe something like 29-2 including a couple of quad 1 wins pre-SoCon tourney.
… But if it’s another 43 year wait (only 41 more years to go) then they will be there by 2066. How many more times will Wofford be there (Big Dance) before 2066? 15 times?
(Yes, I expect they’ll get destroyed by the Vols. Or if you prefer, the “Teers”.)

Well said, agree 100% with this analysis. We get pushed around with more physical teams. Bowser needs to gain more weight and develop more of an inside one-on-one game. Same can be said for Johnston - has a great 3 point shot, but we need guys that can man up to the basket down low with results. Molnar has grown in this area over the year. I'd also love to see Vanderwal work on his shooting to become more of an offensive threat, other than a slasher to the basket. My thoughts are we need a solid transfer ball handler going into next year. If we are able to get a solid transfer stretch forward, that would be icing on the cake.

Well at least we can put up a new banner in the new Timmons

NIT Participation Banner

I am sure FU will be soliciting donations for this in the near future
I would help pay if they would put a banner up for each year's participation in NCAA, NIT and CIT probably 10 or 11 flags. That is one flag for each year's participation rather than one flag with dates at the bottom. Make them big and hang them all over along with all the retired jerseys. Football has all the playoff appearances bannered in the grandstands and rightly so.

True........
Physicality doomed us against Wichita St. in the 2019 NIT and also against San Diego St. in the 2023 NCAA round of 32......
And now against North Texas in the 2025 NIT........

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
