GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman quarterback Harris Roberts has been named to the 2018 Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team, it was announced today.
Roberts was among 47 individuals selected from a pool of nearly 100 nominees for the organization's 21st Annual All-Star Team.
"One of the most important responsibilities that the FCS ADA has is the selection of the Annual Academic All-Star Team," stated current FCS ADA President Bill Smith, director of athletics at Bryant University. "This group of young men are some of the best and brightest football players and scholars in the country. They have been leaders on their individual campuses and have excelled in the classroom, their communities and on the gridiron. They truly exemplify FCS football and now we have the honor of naming them to the 2018 Academic All Star Team."
Roberts, a redshirt senior, served as the starting signal caller on the Paladins' 2018 Southern Conference championship team, overcoming a preseason thumb injury and mid-season concussion to pass for 1,092 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games. In the final outing of his career he completed 16-of-23 passes for 189 yards and career best five touchdowns in a 35-30, conference title clinching road victory over Mercer.
His 182.59 passing efficiency rating in 2018 marked a new school season record.
A four-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, the Cumming, Ga., product sports a 3.66 GPA and is on schedule to secure bachelor's degrees from both Furman and Clemson this spring as part of the Furman-Clemson dual degree cooperative engineering program. He has completed his required curriculum at Furman (pre-engineering) and is now enrolled full-time in Clemson's mechanical engineering studies.
On Sept. 2, 2018, Roberts became the first known player in NCAA football history to start a game against the school in which he was enrolled as a full-time student (Clemson) when he took to the field as the Paladins' quarterback against the FBS second-ranked Tigers.
Roberts' unique story was profiled by several major news organizations, including USA Today, Sports Illustrated, Associated Press, and ESPN.com, and featured on ESPN's SportsCenter following a campus visit by Marty Smith.
