POSITIVES at VMI

It’s just football. Lol

No really, I saw some nice passes from Jones at QB. I also liked that Jones was willing to run the ball once for 18 yards and once as he pulled it for a TD. Such a difference maker when your QB will run ! VMI sucker punched us out of a timeout with a running QB as they got a TD like this also.

33 Gavin Hall obviously has a different gear. As does Hinton. SPEED KILLS. literally if we had one more guy with Hinton / Hall speed we probably win today and one more. I don’t care if the dude is 5’7. Get another speed freak.

Good use of TEs today. Brock Chappell !

Finally near 200 yards rushing or so. And we shoulda won. I know it’s VMI. I get it. But it was still nice to finally see OL school holes for the RBs !!! Best OL run blocking of the year

We ran the ball ok, not great, against Stetson and VMI the 2 worst teams on the schedule. 366 yds 183 ypg. Everyone else: 424 yds. 71 ypg.

Positives - I think what when we ran the offense through Jones, Hicks/Hall, Hinton, and Chappel, the offense looked really good. The calls were in a real rhythm, balanced, and the offense was operating on schedule and moving the ball regularly.

We only punted once.

I thought the defense held up well despite being essentially an all freshmen-sophomore unit. I thought Caldwell Bussey had a really good game and looked like he could be a future Matt Sochovoka type at DT.

I actually thought Kaserud and Hernandez did a good job at NG filling in for Stephens and Dudek. Kaserud looks really athletic - I was surprised to see him listed at 6'4 285. Hernandez is a big body inside and seemed like he had success at that prototype two gap space eater at nose. Both those guys are freshmen.

I thought Gavin Hall looked like the future of the RB position for Furman. He has excellent vision and has great feel for where he needs to be. We might have seen a little bit of a preview of a potential "thunder and lightning" attack next season with Hicks and Hall.

I really like where we are with the TE position. Perhaps we got a little too jump ball happy in the red zone, but Chappell is an absolutely matchup problem for any defense. He's big, tall, excellent hands, and can run. Pryor and Tormey are also massive targets and I think are going to fill into their frames over the next few years. A couple of times our QBs threw balls in contested areas where really only our TEs could get a hand on them.

I like Jones going forward. However I think he chooses difficult passes sometimes when he has easier options in the middle of the field. I think pass protection or lack of limits his ability to scan the field but mostly he avoids the middle of the field where his tight ends are often open.

This all makes a ton of sense. Given that we are basically rolling out a lot of 2s and 3s on Defense, defense did really well. Liked what I saw from 5 in the secondary as well.

Hicks and Hall are going to be a problem eventually.

I think one of our challenges seems to be that when we are in situations where the deep ball is a thread and Safeties stay back, LB have to respect intermediate routes, we can run it. When we get in the red zone and the LB are up and they bring a S in the box... we either can't run it or don't have the confidence to do it and we go to the throws.

From what I can piece together, I think only DE (Jackson), MLB (DiMaggio), and SS (Williams) are our defensive starters the guy we expected in the pre-season to be the starter.

I like Carson for all the reasons you've stated. I would rather see us split the QB time between Trey and Carson to get the maximum reps for each through these last few games. The season isn't salvageable at this point, and the more snaps each gets the more prepared they will be next Fall.

Actually number 7 Harrison was in for a few series on the DL vs VMI. Which I was glad to see. He had a big wrap on his leg I think but he moved pretty well. So DL has 0 and 7 back. Just not 40.

I would also say we could put it at 5 expected starters since20 Achina is starting and has been expected to start for 2 years but for injuries. Glad he’s finally healthy

That’s roughly 5 expected starters on D I think. Was glad to see number 7 out there !

Achina has having to start at another position due to injuries. He was expected to be an ILB and now he's having to play SPUR.

True, just saying that's five returning starter "level" guys. So we could call it 4+ with 7 Harrison out there. I watched him some. He got a good push on some plays.
