Thinking about the past

I miss playing Appy and Ga. Southern. I miss the great atmosphere created by playing those teams. Now we get to play teams like VMI and ETSU played in front of 5,000 sleepy fans. To those that were glad to see these great rivalries leave the SoCon, I hope you are happy. SoCon football is on life support.

Weren’t you a couple of years ago regularly predicting the demise of FBS games for FCS teams?

I still do, especially for the Power 5 conferences.

I do miss those rivalries a lot. And having programs of that caliber in the league raised the play of every team in the league in my opinion. Those games were fun not because we were fans of one of the teams, but because every game always felt like a big-time college football environment. Now the games are fun only for the former reason with few exceptions.

Not anytime soon. We have at least one FBS game thru 2025. Yes I do miss Appy and GSU big time.

I do miss the competition at a high level but I don't miss getting hit in the head with a battery or being threatened by slobbering drunks or having my antenna broke on my car. Only place close was Marsha. Surely there are teams we can play and have some riviarly within normal bounds. Count me as a no to both.

I traveled to Boone, Statesboro, and Huntington. I don't miss them at all. Their fans were rude and unruly, and quite frankly scary at times. But, I've also had issues at Western Carolina. I've been concerned for my personal safety and the safety of my vehicle. If that's "big-time" football, keep it.

For the record, App and GSU played last night. On a Thursday.

Attendance (biggest home game of the year): 19,252 (Paulson has been expanded to accomodate 25,000)

Attendance when Furman played at GSU in 2011: 19,221.

The worst fans I’ve ever encountered were Gamecocks in Columbia. I’ll never go back there for a game. Come to think of it, I hope I never have to go to Columbia for any reason.

For 19,500 fans in Statesboro, it certainly was a great day for a college football game. In fact, for me, any day is a great day for a football game.

I do miss the energy, level of competition, and general disdain for those teams... However, I suspect that when we turn our program around and become consistent once more, then we won't yearn for those past matchups. They can move up and experience some success at the FBS level so Godspeed. Has anybody heard from Marshall???? They will be at best a decent mid major and get rewarded with the Pineapple Pizza Bowl in Apalachicola Florida and only their fans will care. What I really miss is being a serious contender in the SoCon year after year and winning championships. Teams will come and go in the SoCon, but FU all the time!

Avoiding cheap parking can help.

I loved playing App and GSU (App moreso than GSU), but all good things eventually come to an end. As college football continues to realign I think we are better situated to deal with the changes than most of our SoCon peers.

Didn't know there was cheap parking @ South Carolina games.
