Totally Outcoached Today

The buck stops with Clay Hendrix. He got totally out coached today. The team was not ready to play.

While I could go on and on, would someone please explain to me why on at least 3 separate occasions when we needed 8-10 yards, on 3rd down, we passed for 2-3 yards where we had no possible chance of getting the 1st down !!

And why when late in the game , we wasted so much time getting the plays in .

We got totally out coached today!!

No argument here. You could tell from the getgo the offense was not going to do much. Those short passes in lomg yardage situations are ridiculous. If nothing else throw it derp and hope for PI.

I mean, I don't know that we were "out-coached."

Wofford pretty much did exactly what we thought they would. We didn't execute. Coach Hendrix didn't miss blocks, make poor throws, or drop the ball.

The reason for a shorter-than-yardage-needed forward pass on 3rd down has to do with a rule change in 1906. This was when the game rules were described as "gridiron football", and before the NCAA official rules. Although experimented with by Wichita State I believe, the first sanctioned game where a forward pass was employed was between UNC and UGA. Now here's the key: If a player catches a forward pass he is (get this) allowed to run forward for more yardage! So, you see, if a QB doesn't see his first (or maybe second or third) pass option available, he can throw to a shorter yardage receiver or scramble to try for a first down or just throw the ball away. That's why you see shorter-than-yardage-needed passes - many times its not the preferred option but sometimes the only best option.

And I don't blame the coaches. I blame the mojo. You gotta admit that Snyder Field and that damnable Ayers statue emit a powerfully evil mojo.

Out-coached and out-played. Missing the short FG before half was absolutely huge. The defense played well enough to win (13-12). Carson Jones played much better against UTC & VMI.

Shocked that with Harris, Hinton, Pline and Ferguson we could not beat the Wofford defense.

Hopefully a wake-up call.

Coaches don’t execute the plays. They don’t overthrow passes, drop catches, fumble the ball on 4th and 1 etc etc. When the qb throws it 2 yards when we need 8, he may have had to check down to that- coach’s fault?
Not saying our coaches are perfect - they aren’t- but a lot of stuff gets blamed on coaches that is ridiculous.
I will take this staff all day long.

Of course we all have opinions but I'm glad that yours is exactly aligned with mine. I started thinking early in the week that the team needed to take care not to let down (this excludes the defense who played well except for allowing first down conversions with third and long twice in the fourth quarter). I realize it's not easy maintaining a high level of motivation and performance week after week but at the end of the day that's what championship teams do. So the ultimate question becomes do we have what it takes to be a championship team? Before today I had actually been thinking how to arrange my schedule to attend the final. Not any more. Yes, we might win one and maybe even two playoff games but I can't see us going beyond that. That is still good but there's a lack somewhere. I guess I'm overlooking the absence of Huff and Roberto so their presence may alter my perspective.

Hendricks is definitely an improvement over his predecessor and it goes without saying that if players don't execute then all the coaching in the world won't help. But even a winning record often isn't good enough; e.g. Mark Richt at UGA, Mack Brown at Texas, and many others. Coaches are the ones who get the players ready and dropped passes or poor passes may, in fact, be a reflection of that readiness or lack of it. Of course, I don't know and maybe it's even unfair to speculate but it really seemed to me that the Paladins were not ready for this one and that is on the coaches.

One thing that really irks me is that the local paper gives Furman and the SoCon practically zero coverage. Ok, Clemson and USC are the big dogs but even high school football gets more coverage and I doubt that too many HS games get 3,700! I don't know if more coverage would draw more fans (probably not) but you've got to believe that Clemson and USC does draw at least some fans away from Furman games; ie. would be interesting to see if Furman attendance is higher when Clemson is on the road.

If you don't compete at the top level then most folks just don't care, thats the facts...
FCS ball just does not get many folks excited around here...
Its the reason the entire student section is gone after halftime, they just don't care about this level of football even when we are ranked #2....

I think our quarterback was really bad today giving us no chance to win.. better hope Huff gets healthy for next game or its bye bye
He had a bad day for sure but the OL had just as bad a day. Today was the fewest points WC has given up all year except last week vs.hapless Citadel. One of the most offensive challenged teams in the conference ETSU scored 41 on them. My goodness.
