Week 1

Two SoCon teams kickoff tonight. UTC hosts Tennessee Tech @ 7:00. Samford hosts Shorter @7:30

The prevailing feeling is that Samford is going to obliterate Shorter, which is an objectively bad division 2 team and a relatively new program. Shorter was 0-11 last season and was only remotely close to winning 1 game.

The UTC game is an interesting one to follow. The Mocs were surprisingly bad last season after a pretty good run under Russ Huesman. They are a bit of a SoCon enigma this year. Tenn. Tech was not good last season (1-10), but they do represent the possibility for a SoCon out of conference win against an FCS opponent.

Also, a little Furman connection. Tenn. Tech's WR Coach is former Furman standout Adam Mims.

Neither is on the SoCon digital network. And I certainly won't pay $4.95 to watch Samford-Shorter. Really, ESPN?

I wouldn’t watch it even if they offered to pay me to do so. Samford-Shorter? No thanks.

I think ESPN+ is a monthly subscription that likely will include a lot of SoCon (and Furman) games.

You may already know this - just want to clarify for all. (I think it will clarify...never sure)

It’s not $4.95 for the Samford-Shorter game. It’s $4.95/month for ALL ESPN+ programming...and I think they have a $50-ish annual plan. Most SoCon games are going to on ESPN+ vs ESPN3 this year...so if you want to watch most SoCon games (the ones that you aren’t attending), you probably gonna have to come off that fat wallet.

Since most of the games will be on when I’m at a Furman game, I’ll pass. I’ll already know the outcome. I’ll save the $50 and buy an extra hotdog at the Furman game. :)

Here's the question, though. If I pay $4.95 on August 30 (and thereby pay to watch the Samford/Shorter game) do I have to start over in September?

I'm not sure I'd pay $5.00 to watch Samford/Shorter at Seibert Stadium, much less on TV.

Good point. Don’t know. I’ll call Scott Van Pelt & get back to you...

It wouldn't charge you again until Sept. 30.

Glad we don't start w SoCon league games.

Saw where Citadel and Woff clash this week.. our game matters to me most but that is big for those two teams. Also saw that Woff then plays VMI ??

Citadel apparently does the same playing WOff and then Chatt. Two league games to start the season is very odd. Citadel's season could be in jeopardy by week 2 if they don't win at least one of those. Makes it fun as an observer. Will get to see where those 3 (Woff, Citadel, Chatt) teams look to stand within just 10 days from now - have at least a decent feel for where they are and how good. Much more fun than the Samford v Shorter type score that would be anticipated.

Chattanooga did look much improved by the latter part of last year - I expect them to be at least better this year. Not necessarily great but better

That would be an expensive hotdog!

ESPN+ has 55 college football games this weekend alone and this is just the first week. Can't beat it for $5.00 a month. They also have lots of other sports including one MLB game a day. This is a great deal.

A couple of eye poppers. Rhode Island beats Delaware, who many had as a top 15 team. Maine is running New Hampshire off the field. UNH was considered a top 10 team.

Those are good results for Furman as it saddles some of the top teams in the CAA with early losses. Furman may well move up in the rankings even with a loss to Clemson.
