About the same as most JUCO’s…oops, FUBeAR meant to say FCS Schools there. Maybe NeoJUCO’s works.

~500 NCAA Players portalized themselves from 11/28-12/2. Hope they all find a comfy ‘chair’ when the music stops.

Don’t think so - not directly without an NCAA Login. There are Twitter Accounts wholly devoted to reporting on it.

These guys were all listed as seniors, so to this point, none are surprises.

Looks like Furman offered a transfer CB from Bowling Green.

As has typically been the case with transfers, this is a kid we recruited out of high school and offered.

* “Tommy Bledsoe” AKA Timmy Bleekrode was listed on the 2021 FU Roster as a Redshirt Sophomore. He is a 2019 HS graduate.
* Travis Blackshear was listed on the 2021 FU Roster as a Junior. He is a 2018 HS graduate.
* London Lewis was listed on the 2021 FU Roster as a Senior. He is a 2017 HS graduate.
* Adrián Hope was listed on the 2021 FU Roster as a Redshirt Senior. He is a 2017 HS graduate.

Both Lewis and Hope redshirted during the 2017 FU season, so dunno why they were classified differently. Believe both have 1 year of eligibility remaining …from their 2020 (2021 Spring) season not ’counting’ due to Covid.

Bleekrode’s redshirt year as 2019, his 2020 (2021 Spring) season didn’t count (Covid), so seems he would have 3 seasons of eligibility remaining…and he has Tweeted that he has rec’d an offer from Nebraska.

Blackshear redshirted in 2018. He played 2019-2021, but his 2020 (2021 Spring) Season didn’t count due to Covid, so seems he would have 2 years of eligibility remaining.

I would guess they all plan to graduate this May. Take their eligibility to a program that offers grad classes. Same thing Grayson Atkins did.

I am not smart enough to figure out eligibility + COVID.

I am not saying that these guys are all "seniors" in the way we ordinarily use the term. They were recognized on senior day and listed in the media guide as players that would be graduating. To that end, the fact that they are transferring is not "new" news, as it has been published for a number of weeks.

Regarding Lewis, he says he's got two years remaining and graduates in December.

What I think we are seeing is that instead of guys trying to slow things down and spend 5 years in undergrad and play football, it looks like a number of guys are trying to speed things up, finish their undergrad degree in 3 years, and then use their two years of eligibility to get a grad degree.

A couple of questions:

What happens if there's not a suitable grad program that said player wants to attend? Come back to Furman and play another season and work out some sort of grad program of study?

Does our coaching staff just plan for this eventuality? Is it worth avoiding redshirting players who are looking to take this path?

I don't necessarily get the impression these guys are looking for better opportunities, but are taking advantage of a change in the rules that allows them to get two degrees for the price of one. I assume not every player will take advantage of it because there's likely some inherent risk in subjecting your roster spot to the transfer portal for an opportunity that may not occur.

See above regarding Lewis.

It wouldn't shock me if these guys are December grads looking to get into New School U for spring practice.

I guess graduating midyear would also allow you an extra semester of grad work.

If players are acting rationally, then getting 2 degrees for free is a no-brainer. The fact Furman recruits actual student-athletes means that guys are going to be thinking about it.

I don't think you stop red-shirting. The reality is that most freshmen either haven't made up their mind about their long-term goals, or they are very much subject to change.

The transfer rules will presumably be modified eventually - though not back to the way they used to be. In any case, for the time being it's hard to say what the long-term outlook is.

With the costs of higher education today it makes sense to get all you can when the opportunities are available. My son will get his Masters degree this Friday as a GA. No cost to me, or loan for him. Just his time and effort.
