New Clear Bag Policy

I realize that many schools have gone to policies like this in the last few years, but I am unhappy that Furman is implementing this policy after the season has begun. I have used a backpack for years to protect my shoulders. As the weather turns cooler, my backpack holds jackets, blankets, and other items I might need in the cooler weather. I do not own a clear tote bag and do not live in Greenville where I might be able to purchase Furman clear bags. The seat cushions that we have purchased apparently do not fit the requirements also. We do not have seats in the comfy sections and aluminum is very uncomfortable after a while to me. I have looked at the cushion policy and it is not clear as to what is allowed unless it is just a flat cushion, which I do not have.

I am interested to see how others feel about this.

Feel the same way. We have used the same cushions for years with the diamond F logo and like you it conveniently holds stuff we need, or like to have at the game. It has pockets and zippers so after many years these are no longer allowed. Feel like this is not needed. We are not Clempson. The same people show up every game. Our small crowds do not warrant this. Seriously thinking about just staying home.

Totally hypothetical question…

Let’s assume, hypothetically, adding/implementing a Clear Bag / Updated Prohibited Items Policy (for Football & Hoops) by 10/1 allows Furman Athletics to save enough on liability insurance premiums to reallocate those expenditures & double both sports’ Recruiting Budgets.

Would it be worth it?

Would Furman Fans be willing to accept this inconvenience and still attend the game(s)?

Mrs. FUBeAR HATES going to games & concerts that have these policies…I mean HATES it…always complete with a lot of @(&)48#))&’s$#&###$*’&*-ing, but accepts it & still goes to events she wants to attend. FUBeAR don’t care. Just glad they didn’t have a Clear Pants & Clear Socks Policy when I was a young Alum attending FU games…when campus was still ‘very dry.’

Might be a good reason for this change…such as FUBeAR’s hypothetical…or a bee coulda landed in the wrong person’s bonnet…dunno…hate to think people would decide not to attend over this. Maybe they could try Mrs. FUBeAR’s coping mechanism…once the $#@*$”#)#-ing has ended & adjustments made, she seems to enjoy the event as much as always.

On your hypothetical theory, if that is the case why wasn’t it implemented long ago. Why now? Maybe its because our Presidents policies have made attacks more likely in the U.S.? That would be understandable. Anyway I am sure I will adopt Mrs. FUBEAR’s coping mechanism. :D

That President was fired by the American people. But, his little minions are the ones that we need to be concerned about, like the ones that tried to take over the government on January 6th. As for the new policy, it’s just a bag. Makes no difference to me. I just want to watch football and basketball. But, I do thank Furman for doing its part to try to keep us safe.

I haven’t heard much about flag and bear spray toting hoards marauding around the country since Jan. 6, so I’m pretty sure that isn’t showing up in actuarial calculations. Sure, there are probably 500 or so violent right wingers out there somewhere, but we flatter ourselves to think they would pick a Furman game for their last hurrah. I can’t imagine an insurance company or even a woke college president would flag that as a risk. Besides those deadly flag poles and the apocryphal fire extinguishers wouldn’t even fit in bags.

What I do hear a lot about is violent crime from the usual suspects all over the country. That’s probably the trigger. Regular old criminals use guns which do fit in bags, and they use them a lot. If you go to a high school game in a biggish city they do clear bags and it ain’t because of right wing extremism. It is sort of stupid to think there would be gang disputes at a Furman game but we probably fall in a circle some insurance guy drew around Greenville.

I have vowed not to discuss covid, religion, or politics. Like FuBear , glad there were no clear policies back in the day. Sure do miss those mini bottles you could get from Smugglers restaurant on 3 for 1 nights.

Ain’t nothing wrong with fussin’ ‘bout it … long as they don’t use violins…I mean, violence, and don’t hold up the line, impede progress, infringe upon anyone else’s rights. FUBeAR, being all Zen-minded, chooses not to fuss, but just might not attend / frequent private events / private establishments with rules / policies he may not wish to follow / heed.

Quit Lying. Biden's FBI stated there was no conspiracy and no insurrection after their investigation. Also, there were zero guns taken away from those people. If they attended a Furman game it would at least liven the corpses.

I think the timing bothers me as much as anything. If this had been announced a month before the season started, I would have had time to look for a clear bag and the proper seat cushions. This announcement was made three days before I am expected to follow it. If I lived in Greenville, I would have time to come to the bookstore or look in stores in Greenville before this game.
