Has Furman ever played one of the academies?

I'm sure Citadel and VMI have.

Any chance Clay Hendrix uses his connections and schedules a game at West Point, Annapolis or Colorado Springs?

I can speak to your first question. Per the 2018 Furman Football Record Book, the Paladins have played Army five times. They have never played the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy. The latter makes a lot of sense because the AFA was only formed after World War II.

The first game between Army and Furman was in 1930 and the last in 1955. Each of the games were away and all were losses. I'm sure it was a nice trip by train to West Point though. Here's a brief history:

1930-Army 54, Furman 0
1932-Army 13, Furman 0
1939-Army 16, Furman 7
1953-Army 41, Furman 0
1955-Army 81, Furman 0

In the final game, Furman allowed 518 yards rushing on 56 attempts. I'm sure that a matchup in the Clay Hendrix era would be far more competitive than most of these past meetings.

It would be great to see us line up against any of the academy schools because it would be a good contest because of similar playing styles. No doubt FU would be better prepared than prior meetings and may even get a nice W, which would be nice. We really need to return to getting off to good starts early in the season instead of getting in the hole and having to dig our way out....

Sounds nice, but I still expect us to chase the bigger paychecks from the ACC/SEC schools

Anyone else looked at the all-time opponents list and picked out teams you would love to play again to flip the series record, even though most aren't possible anymore? I wonder if we can get five games with Bucknell since we are 0-4 all-time? Or Georgetown (0-1 all-time)? Or George Washington (6-8 all-time)? Or Hofstra (1-2 all-time)? Or how about Maryville (0-1 all-time from 1914)? Parsons (0-1). Riverside (0-1). 2nd Development Reg. (0-1). Stetson (0-2), Tampa (0-3), Washington & Lee (2-3).

The 2005 Hofstra game is a top 5 contender for best games ever in Paladin Stadium.

It was. Attended with my family & a neighbor, who had played at Hofstra, and his family. Always fun to have FU one-up a NE school, and having an ex-Player / neighbor from those vanquished yankees made it a bit sweeter.

...on the other hand, the 2000 Playoff game with them was one of the worst. http://www.furmanpaladins.com/sports/m- ... ur1125.htm

38 degrees, a little windy & drizzling icy rain the whole game. Only 4,214 in the stands & I brought an 8 year old with me who developed a fever on the ride up.

And their little midget RB just hid behind their big OL until he saw a crack and then gained 3.34 yards every play. We couldn’t stop him...couldn’t get off the field. Some kind of botched punt gave them the ball on our 1 in the 4th...and #6 FU fell to...the unranked (I believe) Pride.

Just a miserable day. The most miserable one for me since SCState in ‘82.

Although I hate to see any school move away from Football, because of that game, I was actually happy when I heard about Hofstra shuttering their program. For me, that 2005 2 OT loss they suffered had not been enough penance for them. I’m good now. They are paid up.

I remember it well because Hofstra had Marques Colston who spent a decade playing for the Saints. He caught 72 TD passes in the NFL, but only one in Paladin Stadium.

Speaking with some of our defensive backs after that game, they said Colston was relatively easy to deal with because he never came off the field. If he wasn’t getting the ball on a play, he wasn’t putting out full effort. If the ball was coming his way, you knew it immediately.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
