Just to sort of help everyone do the math (as I understand it).

1. Players typically have 5 years to complete 4 "full seasons" of competition (unless an exception applies).

2. The NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to players whose seasons were "impacted" by COVID-19. I think you can essentially assume that anyone on Furman's roster (or any D1 roster that didn't have a normal fall of 2020 season) would be granted the extra eligibility. Now they have 6 years to complete 4 "full seasons."

3. For Furman players, you can go to their bios to get a pretty good snap shot of whether they have eligibility.

Gilby, for instance, redshirted in 2018. He played "full" seasons in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Because his 2020 was impacted by COVID, he likely still maintains a season of eligibility to play football.

4. Some players have extra eligibility due to an exception.

Sochovka, for instance, redshirted in 2017, he had "full" seasons in 2018, 2019, and 2022. He played in 2021, but was awarded a medical redshirt and granted an extra year of eligibility. So, even though he joined Furman's program in 2017, he still should have an extra season of eligibility due to a medical redshirt and COVID.

I had forgotten this, but Sochovka actually lost his 2018 season to injury, but I suppose did not qualify for a medical redshirt.

Don’t think your number 2) is quite right. It’s right for 2020-2021 Furman Football Players, but might not be correct for others that played a ‘normal’ season despite Covid, such as potential inbound transfers. Doesn’t matter if their season was impacted or not normal. All Athletes received an extra year…

Even if you played 10+ games, there was still a bunch of schedule shifting with non-conference opponents dropping off the schedule weekly.

I sort of assume that if you were on a D1 roster during the fall of 2020, you have an extra season of eligibility.

You don’t have to assume. It’s right there in the pic from the NCAA website…D1, D2, D3…doesn’t matter, impacted or not…doesn’t matter…Fall of 2020, essentially, never happened NCAA eligibility-wise for ANY NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA Football Players.

Then why did he declare? Only time you see someone declare is when they still have college eligibility. If he was done he would automatically be eligible.
