Hartford University athletes are suing the school over their plan to move from D1 to D3. Wish the FU baseball team had gone that route.

There is a reason the FU baseball team did not take that route.
There is NO shortage of lawyers in Greenville.
And, anecdotal evidence/commentary appeared to indicate there was NO shortage of people upset about the Furman decision who would have been willing and able to contribute to a Go Fund Me Page for legal expenses, as the students bringing the suit in Hartford have begun.

Yeah just think how awesome that would have been for the rest of our athletic programs!!

Would have been worth it to hear ED’s reasoning for turning down a HUGE donation to keep baseball and shut down any attempts to keep baseball before they could get started.

Title 9 violations would be the reasoning you’d hear from ED. I’ve heard it so many times already. “Technically”, a university has to mimic the student body when accounting for sports programs provided. Furman is 60% female and 40% male. Our sports teams have to mimic that and to my knowledge, we were breaking that with two extra male sports operating. That stood on itself apparently to justify men’s lax and baseball.

So instead of putting a fund together for baseball, let’s start a fund for women’s rowing! We OBVIOUSLY need that! ;) This is the cheat code to bring back your beloved baseball team.

Didn't we have women's swimming before it was a NCAA sport?

We do! A beautiful one!
So what.
Our lake would probably have to be at least quadrupled in size to accommodate practice and home competition; or else we’d probably have student-athletes having to travel 90 minutes round trip to a suitably-sized body of water for every practice and “home competition”.
Other than those major hurdles, I think it’s a fine suggestion.
Just be sure to keep those costs in the equation when you start that fund.

Beach Volleyball 6 - relatively inexpensive. FUBeAR will contribute to sponsoring this one
Bowling 5 - balls & cool shoes; easy-peasy
Equestrian 15 - BYOH & build a barn. Go!
Fencing 5 - ROTC can share cost
Field Hockey 12 - sticks, balls, plaid skirts. NBD
Gymnastics * 12 - Recruit 1 Olympian & her NIL can fund program
Ice Hockey 18 - Swamp Rabbits would help
Rifle- includes co-ed teams 3.6 - see Fencing
Rowing 20 - Enlarged lake helps quest for carbon neutrality
Rugby 12 - Beer is biggest expense for this one
Skiing 7 - How far is wolf Laurel?
Swimming & Diving 14 - So retro
Triathlon 6.5 - we could at least Tri, right?
Water Polo 8 - Nose clips are what…$2.99

144.1 Scholarshipped Women’s Student Athletes we could have, but don’t.

All great ideas.
Don’t forget other possibilities that are emerging or have emerged. We can be among the pioneers for:
• Acrobatics & tumbling
• Women’s wrestling
• STUNT Yep. STUNT.
• Etc.
Is axe throwing an NCAA sport?
Rock climbing?
Double Dutch?
Can we increase the number of scholarships for some of the women’s teams/sports that WE already have?
Could we use Lake Robinson, which may be “only” a 40 minute round trip for rowing team practices and for “home” competition events?

This list is the 14 NCAA-sanctioned D1 Women’s Sports and the maximum number of Scholarships that can be offered. If Title IX was/is the issue, some mix of these sports could be/could have been added to enable FU to continue sponsoring Baseball.

If $’s were/are the issue, then that’s a different kettle of trout. In that case…though it may not apply in Academia, there is an old bidness axiom that FUBeAR has found to be true: you can’t cut your way to profitability.

Who’s going to contribute some snazzy Purple Bowling Shoes and get this party started?
