Five SoCon games today.
UNCG beat Louisiana Tech in a neutral court game 80-73. Louisiana Tech's only other loss was by 7 to LSU. They beat Wichita State by 13 at Wichita State to break WSU's 22 year winning streak in home openers.
ETSU dominated North Dakota St. and won 79-61.
Western Carolina won their their first D1 game of the season by 12 over Jacksonville. Jacksonville had been on a three game winning streak that included victories over South Alabama and Chattanooga.
The Citadel won again - 84-81 over South Florida. It was USF's second loss of the year. Their prior loss was in OT to Georgetown by 3. Senior transfer Lew Stallworth, a 6'1" point guard, is ripping it up for the Bulldogs. He has averaged 23 ppg in their three D1 games (Texas, James Madison, South Florida) and is hitting 62% of his shots for the year.
The only SoCon team to lose was Mercer. They dropped a 78-74 decision at undefeated N. C. State. N.C. State lead by 5 at the half, built a 21 point lead midway through the second half and withstood a furious Mercer run in the last ten minutes. The Wolfpack got the benefit of several 50/50 calls late in the game. Mercer's junior college transfer guard Djordje Dimitrijevic had 25 points on 7-10 FG shooting. Don't foul him. He is 22-22 from the FT line this year including 11-11 today.
The SoCon was rated #14 by Sagarin before today's games and beat the predictions in every game so it could move higher in conference rankings. It is behind the Mid-American Conference and Missouri Valley and ahead of the Sun Belt and Conference USA.
Only two and a half weeks into the season but the league looks tougher than any year in a long time.
